Stopped by here for a Friday lunch based on other enthusiastic reviews. Can't say I agree with them. One person's intimate experience to me was dark and cramped. This place is really a diner with stools at a counter plus a few tables for 2 on street level plus an upstairs bat cave that might seat 20 in a pinch. It's painted all black with minimal lighting that makes me suspicious of sanitation.
Some of the food was exceptionally good such as the various eggplant dishes that really were outstanding but the grilled fish I ordered was a so so lacking flavor and oily and served with beans not at a safe serving temperature and rice that quite ordinary. Paricularly shocking are the wine prices. $9.50 for a glass! and the least expensive was $7.50.
Service was charming and efficient but the kitchen a bit on the slow side. All in all this is the kind of place to try for your own opinion if you don't mind being crowded and don't dink wine. But forget the gushy reviews that seem to place more emphasis on the owner's style rather than the combination of food, price, and atmosphere.
