“A nice surprise”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

My husband, teenage daughter and I went to the Union Inn last night with a promotional coupon that entitled us to $40 of food and beverage for $20. Participating in this promotion was one of the more intelligent things I have done recently.
Located on lower Union Street, the Union Inn doesn't really look like much from the outside. I wish I could say that the interior was cozy and welcoming, but it wasn't. It was dark, and sparsely furnished and there end the negatives.
The bartender welcomed us and invited us to sit where we wanted, so we selected a table under the brightest light (unfortunately next to a speaker, but the bartender had EXCELLENT taste in music, so beyond the volume being a little higher than we would have liked, that wasn't a problem.)

The bartender also served as our waiter and he was beyond diligent in seeing that our sodas were replenished as soon as the glasses emptied.

The menu offers pub grub, and lots of it. We selected a dozen wings with "Moonshine sauce" (a mixture of honey and barbeque), a fish and chips plate, chicken tenders with ranch dressing and a Sampler Platter, which included onion rings, toasted ravioli, jalapeno poppers and something recommended by the bartender (in his only misstep of the night): bacon cheddar rolls, which turned out to be fried mashed potato patties with a couple of flecks of bacon and no discernible cheese. Tasty, but not what we had expected.

The fish was stupendous--fresh and flaky and not fried to death. We have never had better wings---these were juicy, meaty, crispy and well-sauced. The carrots and celery on the plate were actually fresh and did not show any signs of having been cut up last month. The bleu cheese dressing was chunky and superb. Our daughter was astonished by the number of chicken tenders--four very large pieces, nicely prepared and accompanied by a commendable ranch dressing dip. The fried Sampler Platter was chockfull of artery-busting goodies, most of which had to go home in boxes.

We would certainly return to the Union Inn, but we will sandwich our visit between trips to the gym!
