A rendezvous for a business meeting turned into a very pleasant evening as a result of this chance location. I say chance because in fact the local resident who recommended it as an easy place to meet, had never been there himself!
Places like Scarsdale often have several of these kind of establishments; usually with an Italian background theme and with decor almost indistinguishable one from the other.
So if this feels like a dozen other upscale New York bistros, then there are only two things that are going to make it stand out: service and quality of the food.
Given how many zillions of Italian-America restaurants exist in the North Eastern USA, it often surprises me how bad many of them are. Limp pasta, everything drenched in tomato sauce and usually ridiculous portion sizes. But at The 808 Bistro, they really have come up with an excellent "Italian-Fusion" concept that works. The fishcake appetizer that I enjoyed was perfect - just the right amount, delightful texture, pretty salad greens with delicious sauce. The sweet potato and ginger soup was delicate and perfectly seasoned (don't reach for the pepper until you taste it!) and the choice of main dishes was wide enough to please anyone (but not so many choices to be bewildering to the diner and impossible for the chef to manage).
The icing on the cake for me was the exemplary service. From the bar staff to the wait staff, the service was polite, friendly, professional and unobtrusive. Difficult to know, in fact, how the service could have been any better. And THAT absolutely made the experience memorable.
