This is a very beautiful hotel and surroundings It is also very old. They have the old cast iron heaters. We have a monthly coupon from the casino nearby to stay for only $69 the night. The last two times we stayed were the begining of Dec and the 2nd weekend of Jan. Normally the rooms are adequate in size, but this last time the reservation was made late and we ended up with a double bed. The room was very small, you had to watch Tv on your side. The beds are very comfortable. There are large rooms available for parties as they have a resturant within the hotel. Also it is walking distance to SPAC. This really is a must do if your looking for something that feels similar to quite a few years ago.

We appreciate you taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor. The Gideon Putnam is a Historic Landmark Hotel, and as such, it definitely evokes feelings of nostalgia. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay, and we thank you for encouraging others to come experience the same.

The second weekend in January we were near capacity, and so I apologize that you ended up with one of our smaller rooms. On your next trip to Saratoga and/or the Casino we do hope you will allow us another opportunity to better serve you.

We have stayed at the Gideon Putnam on several occasions over the past 25 years. Most recently twice in the last two years. We have been placed in a large luxurious room on the 4th floor and small claustrophobic rooms on the second. We stay for the location, as we love to hike and run on the trails in the park. The bathrooms need improvement. Many have painted baths with chipped paint and slow drains. Heating and AC units are noisy. The beds are nice and comfy and TVs are HD and updated. It is an historical building from the New Deal era, but you can still install replica fixtures that are actually functional. We had to have a bath drain cleared twice in our last visit. My advice is to ask for one of the larger updated rooms on the upper floor or in the corner rooms.

Thank you for your honest feedback. We are so glad to hear you find your stay with us comfortable, but I would have to agree, improvements can always be made.

Care for a Historic Landmark Hotel such as the Gideon Putnam is eternal. When Delaware North Companies took over management in 2008, we committed $19.7 million toward capital improvements. You will continue to see improvements to the hotel with each phase of renovation. The trails are calling! We look forward to your return.

My mom and I went for a girl's get away in the middle of the snowstorm this week! I have visited in the summer, but never in the winter and what a treat! The room was beautiful, clean, and spacuious. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly! The hotel was beautifully decorated for the holidays and we enjoyed sipping wine in front of the two fireplaces in the lobby that are set up in such a cozy way. We enjoyed using the hotel's snow shoes and exploring the beauty of the state park, relaxed in the baths at the Roosevelt Spas, walked around downtown Saratoga and poked in and out of stores and restaurants in the snow. We especially enjoyed the hotel bar and the friendly bar tenders. All the guests were friendly and from all over the world. I think this may be a new holiday tradition for us! It's also great fun during the track season and in the fall when the leaves are changing! Accomodations could not be nicer!!!

We love you! Because like the last reviewer... you and your mom discovered just how much the Gideon Putnam has to offer. We are located within the Saratoga Spa State Park, five minutes from downtown, and no matter what time of year, there is so much to do. It sounds like the two of you had a perfect, relaxing, rejuvenating getaway. We hope that you do make the Gideon Putnam your holiday tradition. Thank you!

Weekend stay highlighted by a lovely snow covering gorgeous grounds. Historic Hotel, well maintained with modern conveniences. Architecture is lovely. Hotel provides snowshoes and opportunity for sleigh rides. Had breakfast in the Putnam lounge - delicious omelette and amazing oj reasonably priced food. King room, smallish bathroom, but clean. Check out rate discounts on hotels.com before paying full price - we got an awesome deal as we were really last minute. Spent Friday evening in downtown Saratoga at a cute Irish pub with super entertainment. Saturday we snowshoed then went to the on grounds spa - another amazing offer hat you shouldn't pass up! Great staff and service at the Gideon. Well worth the trip!

Last week my husband and I decided to head to the casino. Along the way we encountered a 30 mile detour along back roads. We decided that traveling home in the dark on unfamiliar roads was not an option. I called from the road and made the reservation. After spending time at the casino we arrived around 9pm. Not having planned for this we were totally unprepared. The 2 men at the front desk were so kind, giving us all kinds of toiletries..toothbrushes, shaving cream, razor, makeup removal wipes, etc. Not long after going to our room, the phone rang and it was the front desk offering to open up the gift shop so that we could get something to munch on and drinks. When we went to pay for the water and soda, the gentleman would not take our money. He said that we had had enough of an adventure and to enjoy our drinks. This was not our first time staying here and will not be the last. Hopefully we will bring our own supplies!

I have brought my wife and two young children here for the last several Columbus Day weekends. We enjoy biking on the grounds, and my children enjoy playing and flying kites on the fields. We eat breakfast in the Georgian dining room, and enjoy that setting. We hope that the Gideon Putnam stays the way it is - it is unique.

Thank you for praising our unique and historic property! The Gideon Putnam is a great place to create family traditions; we are thrilled to hear you have created one of your own. Autumn is beautiful here, not only in Saratoga Spa State Park... but in Saratoga Springs... and in upstate New York. Thank you for choosing us, and if we are lucky, maybe we will see you and your family during one of the other beautiful seasons.

As anyone who visits the Saratoga region during race season knows, hotels and, indeed, bedrooms of any kind, are at a premium in late July and throughout August. I have stayed at my pick of absolute dumps and paid handsomely for the priviledge of cold showers, spiders en masse, beds that hadn't had a mattess change since WW II - etc. During Race Season the greatest desire for those of us with limited funds is to be able to afford the Gideon Putnam... Serene beyond perfection...this hotel stands as a monument to civilized and unattainable living while the Ponies are running. Finally, after 25 years of gazing, I could afford to stay at this dowager hotel. It was Thanksgiving and we booked two nights. The good news first: The king sized bed was perfect. I could have taken the mattress home with me. The decor is nice, the lobby very much as it always is -- a promise of elegance. What I found over the Thanksgiving holiday was a hotel full of incredibly "low rent" individuals. We had one group banging on the door next to us, attempting to get the occupant upright and answering the door. A quick and un friendly stare from me stopped that noise. Then across the hall, a little (sounded like a tiny dog) yapping dog barked and whined and cried hysterically for more than an hour. After the first fifteen minutes,, I called the front desk and asked them to please have this situation resolved. Nothing happened and the dog continued to bark hysterically. So, after a half hour, I called the front desk again and had them listen to the noise (which they found astonishing) through the phone... I gave them three alternatives -- either move us, remove the dog or refund us. I found it hard to fathom their lack of movement on this matter. After an hour, the dog stopped the noise. Assuming the little thing didn't die of heart break, I can only presume the owners returned and the dog was quieted. The room (bedroom) itself was crowded with a bed, two chairs, desk and bureau that also contained a refrigerator (nice)... I was startled to find the room so small, since this was an end room with a screened porch attached. The bathroom was also tiny...but, nice. We enjoyed the Spa baths and spa services. We do love this place, but certainly the Gideon Putnam has lost its mystique in my eyes. The breakfast service was staggeringly slow. The first day, it wasn't an issue...however on the second day, after waiting for 1/2 hour for oatmeal... well, you know the drill. I would only recommend this hotel under specific cost points and otherwise, you might as well stay at any of the other places in the area...none are to be recommended due to over pricing in the summer.

Room Tip: I would suggest the third floor, if it is a possible option

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us. Built in 1935, the Gideon Putnam is a Historic Landmark Hotel, and unfortunately, some of the rooms are small. We are glad to hear that overall you love the Gideon, that you were comfortable, you find the Saratoga Spa State Park to be serene beyond perfection and that you enjoyed your experience at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa. We are disappointed, however, to hear that your stay was interrupted by both a noisy neighbor and a barking dog. We are proud to offer select pet friendly rooms because we realize that pets are family too. But when our animal guests are anxious or carry on, we do attempt to reach the owners. I'm so sorry it took more than an hour for that dog's owners to return.

Please accept our sincerest apology for failing to meet the level of service that you deserve. We do hope that you will allow us another opportunity to better serve you - sometimes holiday celebration gets the better of people.
