“Horses and good times”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

We stayed at the Union Gables Inn during the August 2013 race meet at Saratoga. The inn is an old Victorian home on Union avenue within an easy walk of the Saratoga racecourse . It is also an easy walk in the other direction to Congress Park and the bustling scene in downtown Saratoga Springs. There is off-street parking. So, just park your car , put on some walking shoes and enjoy. We stayed in a third floor room. It was spacious and comfortable. All of the rooms I saw looked lovely. They have added a gorgeous swimming pool this year, which we did not try due to weather, but it is a nice touch. The grounds are gardens and lovely. The front wrap-around porch is a great place to have breakfast, which is expertly prepared and very tasty. A good way to start the day. Some folks like to do the breakfast at the track. We did it once. If you're stating at UNION GABLES , forget the breakfast at the track....it is crowded and not nearly as good as what you get at Union Gables.

Paul and Candace are delightful and take good care of you. They have good suggestions for dinner. We particularly enjoyed Mouzon house and its sister restaurant, one Caroline Street Bistro. Outstanding jazz at Caroline street bistro , and that whole area is hopping at night with bars and music, after which you can stroll back to the quiet of Union Gables and have a great night sleep before venturing out again to check out the horses.

I would avoid the wine bar for dinner. Food was ok at best, and service was terrible. Can't go wrong with Mouzon or Caroline Street though.

I chose to stay at the Union Gables B&B during the Saratoga racing season, so knew I would pay a premium price. However, at $400 US/night the value was just not there. The room was tired: pealing wallpaper in the bathroom, circa 1980's vanity and no storage in the bathroom, showerr very tight. The bed linens were cheap and the mattress lumpy. Window A/C sounded like a DC-3, and the windows were painted shut, so the sweet Saratoga air could not be enjoyed.
The building is lovely, the veranda enticing, but the value is not there.

Stayed at Union Gables for the second time, and was just as pleased this year. It's such a great location, walking distance to the track, horse sales, and downtown. No downtown or track parking problems for us! We had the Cindy room again, and everything was clean and the beds are extremely comfy. We had no problems with street noise, but we didn't face Union Avenue. Staff are all very nice, Paul and Tom were both very helpful. We showed up a bit early for check-in but Paul made the extra effort to see if our room was ready and get us settled in. The breakfasts are delicious and you get plenty! And the new pool is fantastic, gives it a real resort atmosphere. All in all another excellent summer getaway. Will definitely come back.

Room Tip: The Cindy room is very quiet, we didn't have any street noise issues.

Grounds and pool are beautiful and large front porch is perfect for watching the sights of Saratoga Springs. We really enjoyed the cook to order breakfasts. However, there was definitely a feeling of rules to be followed. Our travel companions had booked the carriage house for our 2-night stay. The carpeted stairs are steep and have a turn which makes for awkward access. One of the bedrooms is quite small and the other much larger. There are signs that maintenance needs to be addressed e.g..our towel rack was coming out of the wall and sliding doors on tub stayed off track. All things can be fixed to ensure a top quality inn. We got wonderful recommendations for restaurants on both nights from the innkeeper.

Stayed for four days recently. Beautiful building with unparalleled location. Terrific made to order breakfast. Managers Paul and Candace were very gracious. Unfortunately the owner seemed more intent on enforcing rules (if two people are in the pool area one must be outside the pool itself) than being a welcoming host. Some rooms had peeling wallpaper and quirky plumbing. Higher expectations for a B&B with this price point.

Our second stay and it was just as fabulous as the first! When we walked in the door we felt at home. Everyone is very attentive and go out of their way to ensure that our stay was stellar. Also, the proximity to flat track and downtown eliminated the need for a car. Oh, did I mention the great pool. The gardens, pool, porch, breakfast make it THE perfect place and stay.
