“Pizza is high on value but low on enjoyment.”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

Needed a place that served very basic pizza to bring to my sister-in-law's house in Saratoga. Pope's was the closest to our final destination so we called ahead and arranged for two large pizzas to be ready for pick-up by the time we drove from Clifton Park.

One large Cheese Pizza ($9) and a large Cheese Pizza with mushrooms, sausage and onions ($13.50) sounded like the best value we've had ordering pizza in a good number of years. Large was quite large, maybe 18-20 inches in diameter.

The pizzas were still warm as we began to serve the very, VERY large slices. They are a reasonably thin crust with a thick edge. Mushrooms are canned, and sausage is crumbled; a fair amount of sauce and cheese. Overall, flavors are just OK. The crust at its edges quickly gets very chewy as the pizza cools. My wife said the leftover slice she tried a few hours later that night was almost like eating a cracker when she got to the crust's edge. I'm hoping that if we need to bring another simple, basic pizza to my sister-in-law's in the future we'll try someplace different and better.

“Food good, delivery service horrible.”
Reviewed February 22, 2014 via mobile

On Saturday, February 22...people from my apartment ordered from Popes 3 times; 830pm, 1030, 2am. The deliveries for the first two orders were fine...a little late on deliveries but understandable...both times the delivery driver had no problem ringing the doorbell...but the third delivery-the guy never rang the doorbell...called my cell phone twice which was on the charger cause it was almost dead-----never rang the doorbell in which is an easy one to find. The first two deliveries has no problem getting here. By the time i got the rude voicemail from the driver i called the number back and it was for an extramart convinent store-the lady stated the guy had already left. Popes was closed. The delievery driver left a message stating (in the rudest tone) "you didnt answer, too bad, you're not getting your food." Okay. Next time ring my doorbell buddy-lose the attitude. Anyways needless to say-they have good food-we order from them all the time-but after tonight---that changes everything. It's funny how two deliveries got here fine and the third (which was close to closing time) mysteriously got messed up...hmm...did the guy want the free pizza for him and his pals on a saturday night? Needless to say-I will be going into Popes to voice my complaint in person on Tuesday when they reopen for the week.

“Poor delivery service”
Reviewed February 22, 2014 via mobile

Popes has the best calzones in town. That being said, we ordered Popes 3 times tonight. At 8p, 11p and 2a. The first time we were quoted 45 minutes, yet it took nearly an hour and a half for the food to arrive. When they arrived, they rang the door bell and we went to get our food. The second deliver was quoted to be an hour delivery time. That was about accurate. They showed up about an hour later and rang the doorbell and we went and got our food. The third delivery was quoted as 45 minutes. After about an hour we started to inquire where our food was. At that time we got up to retrieve a phone to call them only to encounter a missed call from an unknown number. When listening to the voice message for the unknown number here is what we heard: "Yah, this is Popes, you didn't answer your phone, you don't get your food." I want to point out that the first two drivers of the night rang the door bell and historically every driver we've ever had had rang the doorbell. Further more when calling the number back we found that the driver called from an Xtra mart. That leaves the question of wether or not he actually came here.

Popes, time to find a new driver who wants to represent your brand with integrity and do right by your loyal customers. Shame on the driver and shame on Popes for employing someone who doesn't exemplify a drive to serve and satisfy his customers.

There is nothing special about this place except the pizza!! It is a plain and simple place with absolutely delicious pizza. I never visit without stopping here for this delicious treat. The wait staff goes out of their way to make your visit pleasant as well!

“Great Pizza”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Having eaten at Pope's for the last ten years, I compare their pizza with the best in NYC. The crusts are thin and crisp, the sauce smooth and tomato-ey, the cheeses bubbly and rich. I have had the cheese, pepper and onion, pepperoni, and anchovy - all excellent. Classic pizzaria decor including maps of Italy on the walls. The wait staff are cheerfull and full of zip.
