“Way Overpriced”
Reviewed August 30, 2008

We paid an exorbitant price ($270) to stay in this very average motel. Granted, we were there during racing season, and the motel is excellently located right in the center of town. However, we have stayed in other motels in Saratoga Springs this time of year where we didn't feel so ripped off. Our room was clean, but felt very cramped and the mattresses were thin and uncomfortable. Continental breakfast was minimal. We would not stay here again.

This motel is decieving in looks but offers roomy, clean accomodations for a very reasonable rate. Our room was a corner, king bed room with a small fridge and standard bathroom. I especially enjoyed the two windows on either side of the room and functioning window in the bathroom. Plenty of light, but no noise. The mattress was bouncy because of the springs which could be felt on the surface, but was comfortable to sleep. Maybe a mattress pad would have helped. There is a small but long and 4 ft. deep pool in the "courtyard" looking corridor which all the rooms surround. The upper level rooms have a balcony that overlooks the pool area. The pool was chilly. The lobby had albums of restaurant menus, things to see and things to do. There was a buffet setup for the continental breakfast at the back of the lobby. Once checked in, we wandered up and down the main street and noticed all the shops, restaurants, clubs, bars, and coffee houses. Most are local, others, like Starbucks, Borders, Chico's Talbots, Gap, Eddie Bauer, were also available, all within walking distance. We had lunch (sandwich menu) at the Circus Cafe, excellent food, friendly staff, reasonable prices for an attractive meal. Dinner was at Lillian's, a very Victorian, ornate candlelit experience. Dinners were pork with shitake mushrooms and a wine sauce, and a seafood sampler platter. Delicious! Breakfast the next morning was at Uncommon Grounds. Coffees, bagels, sandwiches, pastries and couches, chairs and tables. A cozy lounge atmosphere. Affordable and tasty. We would definitely come back to the Downtowner if for the location alone.

I found this motel to be one of the nicest ones downtown and within walking distance of the race track. The owners and staff went above and beyond to accommodate us ( a large group of firefighters) and i don't think a single request was not tended toby someone. We can't wait to get back this year and hopefully for many more. It may not be fancy but they treat you like family.

Saratoga Downtowner used to be our favorite place to stay - location and price could not be beat - under the wondeful and caring management of Lois and Gene. Now that it is under new management, rooms are mixed up when you arrive, the prices have skyrocketed - but without the proper building upgrades or updating to match the price. It's a lovely motel which could flourish with a refurbishment. Some of the rooms are so small that the one double bed is wall to wall. Don't ever take these rooms if you do not like confined space. Go for the King rooms which are the most expensive. And during racing season, they take up their own parking spaces with a tent so their children can sell kettle corn popcorn. Leaves clients to fend for parking elsewhere. The continental breakfast is always cold and soggy danish or other frozen items that they defrost. Nothing classy about it. We now stay elsewhere. Sorry, but it had to be said.
