“Nice picnic venue under the stars”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

We have gone a few times to enjoy concerts and find this an easy venue to get in and out of - and the performances have all been exceptional. Bring a picnic basket and some wine and a blanket (and a sweater if you are there in the evening) and enjoy a fun night with your honey.

“Shows and Music”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

The SPAC is a marvelous place to visit. I really enjoy the summer concerts on the lawn with friends - we do the "Saratoga Thing" - snacks, meal, and wine. It's really an enjoyable evening. And if you are lucky and pick the right nights the fireworks after the concerts are GREAT!

Whether you choose to have a picnic on the lawn or get seats inside the open-air concert hall, SPAC offers a wide variety of music, ballet, and symphony.

“Phishin' at SPAC”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Went to SPAC this past summer and am returning again to see the boys from Phish. Venue gets a lot of bad rap due to size, and some of it is warranted. Seats on the lawn are limited, but get there a little earlier. Dont rush the gate at 725 and expect a spot. The venue itself is gorgeous. The best way to see a show there honestly is go early, park somewhere in the park (not telling you my secret spot), go for a hike, pack some lunch, head to the lot....FYI open container is enforced heavily so bring yourself a concealer.....

“A Good Option for Summer Concerts”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is an open amphitheater located on the western edge of the city of Saratoga Springs, NY. It was built in the 1960's by NY State as the summer home for three classical performing ensembles: the NY City Ballet, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the NY City Opera. Only the Ballet and Orchestra remain in residence in the summers, and for abbreviated seasons. There are also special events featuring touring rock bands and other current attractions. In addition, smaller theaters support theatrical productions, small ensembles from the orchestra, and other more specialized events. There is also a restaurant on site, the Hall of Springs, for a pre-event dinner. Reservations are a must for this lovely but expensive restaurant.

Weather permitting, it is possible to enjoy a lovely evening sitting on the lawn listening to the orchestra. Large television screens have been installed, permitting concert-goers to see the performers from a closer camera angle. Viewing the ballet in this manner takes some adjustment if you are used to sitting inside, however. But lawn attendees can bring refreshments and can make the pre-show time a real social event, including bringing for and beverages (a glass of wine, anyone?).

Prices are reasonable for this quality of classical programming: between $20-50 depending upon seating location. Special event prices are much higher.

There are also simple foods and beverages available for purchase ($$). During intermission, a walk around the expansive grounds is a simple pleasure. Worth a visit if you are an affectionado of the best of classical music and ballet.
