We normally book our stays in advance, my wife being the ultimate "Travel Planner", but on a road trip through New England, we were unsure how far we wanted to go on the third day, so we decided to take a chance on finding a good place to stay. Arriving in Lake Placid, we found it full of horses for their annual big horse event, so we moved on to Saranac Lake, the next little ski resort town along the route. Saranac Lake shows the results of what happens when you put millions into one resort for the Olympics; the other little towns suffer a decline because everyone goes to the "popular" spot.
The Lake Flower Inn is almost the closest motor inn to the town itself, being a short walk from downtown. It has a great location, close to everything and right on the lake. This is a basic old fashioned style Motor Inn; two banks or rooms, perpendicular to the road with a swimming pool down by the lake and the office up front. The room was clean, the WiFi fast and the hostess friendly and helpful; what more could you want? We had an excellent sleep, could walk to a delicious meal for dinner, and easily access downtown by foot.
There were only two cars in the parking lot overnight, showing how Lake Placid dominates the tourist dollar in the area, but this nice little Motel in Saranac Lake is an inexpensive alternative, worth the drive.
