My husband and I stayed at The Point for a long weekend to ceebrate our 20th anniversary the weekend of May 5th. There are not enough good things to say. From the moment you arrive in a setting of spectacular lakeside beauty - to the non check-in process - you are just offered champagne and taken to your room, followed by a tour of the property - we loved it. We stayed in the Mohawk Room - the former Rockefeller master bedroom and it was perfect - big crackling fireplace for the chilly evenings - the most cofortable (and puffy) bed you will ever sleep in - lovely furnishings. I was a little wary of dressing for dinner (jacket and tie most nights - formal on Saturday) but it was actually so much fun and perfectly appropriate for the setting. The food was wonderful. The other guests were all people you would want to spend time with - and if you wanted solitude is was readily available - loved hiking with the manager's dog, Maggie - and loved taking picnic lunches out on the lake in one of the electric boats. If you have the ablity to splurge for a weekend you will have a great time.

The Point takes customer care to an entirely different level. For example, one day we asked if we could have lunch on the lake on one of the property's boats. Unfortunately the boat in question had already been booked my another guest, so as an alternative the General Manager took us out to an island on the lake and set up a high quality picnic lunch for us there. He returned a couple of hours later to take us back to the resort. Even the GM's dog looks after the guests leading them through trails in the woods and safely back home again. What an experience!

first the good. location, services, facilities are exceptional. grounds and access to lake, the lake itself beautiful. many areas to explore on the lake.

many areas to relax in isolation on point grounds. a game room with pool parlor and tv.

cannondale bikes for touring near area. many types of watercraft, even though the water was quite cold in july. tennis court in great shape.

staff wants to be challenged by requests. we were not imaginative enough to challenge them, but they aspire to go out of their way.

food was 5-star and quite rich. practically you can have anything to eat at anytime and more, rather than less is the rule. have to pace yourself, especially for the grand dinners.

communal dinners were terrific. very social setting with friendly, interesting (and down-to-earth) people. the hosts do a great job. made many friends that would would love to see again.

now the other side...rooms vary quite a bit. privacy in rooms outside the lodge far exceed those in the lodge, even though in-lodge rooms have more character in some instances. worth extra money for non-lodge rooms.

value proposition is tough. not a value by any measure. worth the experience? depends. as a younger traveler (mid-30's), more interested in activities than gorging ourselves on food. there are plenty of activities, but dining is a major activity here. food probably a bit too rich for the summer.

rooms were fine, but not spectacular, although the fireplace in every room is a treat.

the hospitality business is exploring their price point limits. prices are well above "intrinsic value" in many cases, but consumers don't quite yet mind. as long as that is the case, the point is priced as it should be, exceptional price for exceptional property. but one could find other 5-star experiences for a less, even if they unbundled dining from lodging. here is where the point appears over-priced to me.

I spent 2 nights at The Point in June 2006. The Point is in a class by itself. I have stayed in many of the world's top hotels and The Point surpasses all of them. The lodging is beautiful, an old hunting lodge decorated to perfection in rustic style. What really sets The Point apart is the quality of the service. Perhaps because the hotel only has 11 rooms, the staff is attentive, anticipates every whim and is extremely accessible. Every time you leave the room, the staff goes in and restarts a fire. Without providing much notice, you can be taken out in The Point's hackercraft motorboat or go out for lunch or cocktails on an electric boat for a tour of Saranac Lake.
The food is gourmet and they have alternate dishes prepared in case you care for an alternate entre at dinner. The wine is top drawer (Cakebread Cellars, Grigich Hills). The one potential drawback is that dinner is served "en famile", family style, with cocktails from 7-8 and a 4 course dinner from 8-10. The manager is an outstanding host (even if it is his job) and goes out of his way to ensure that quiet or elderly people are involved in dinner conversation. The other guests are the luck of the draw. Our fellow guests were executive types, mostly down to earth, with only unpleasant pretentious person in the crowd. You do not need to mix with the other guests, except at dinner.
Yes, it is expensive, but it is a once in a lifetime experience. If you can afford it, and want to live like a very rich person for a few days, I recommend you plan a trip.

I'd heard such great things about The Point... and I wasn't disappointed. It is very, very special. Yes, it is expensive, but considering it's genuinely all-inclusive, you could spend a lot more at a high-end hotel in one night in New York City. The most wonderful aspect of The Point is the staff. Everyone here seems to genuinely adore working at the camp and they really want you to enjoy your stay. The service seems as unconditional as it is flawless. Every whim is catered for and it's as fun as it is refined. The airline lost one of our bags, which had our shoes in, so we dined in black tie with sneakers and everyone thought it was hilarious. The whole thing looks like a Ralph Lauren or Bruce Weber advert and feels like a home rather than a hotel. If only real life was like a stay at The Point. I can't wait to go back.

My wife and I stayed at the Point based upon tremendous critical acclaim in the national press. Our experience was less than overwhelming. The arrival experience is first rate, giving the sense that you are entering a private estate; which in essence it is. However, after being shown through the gates and directed to the main building, we felt lost. Somehow we were lost in traffic and felt as if we were intruding on a house party. Once shown to our room, we felt as if it wasn't as described in our confirmation process. At over $2000/night including all taxes and service charge, our accomodations were hot (no a/c), tired, and not detailed to standards one would expect at those rates. All meals are served family style and unless you like alcoholic laced dialogue, this is not the place for you. My suggestion would be to try their sister property in Lake Placid for a more enjoyable experience, one that is not so pretentious and the value is much more in line with the price.
