“Fantastic start to our New York tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013

Throughout our travels my family of four (Mum,Dad and two teenage girls) always say "what's your top?" We still have some travelling to do on our current trip but Caldwell House, Dena and John are in top spot with their welcome, treats, cookies, stories, warmth. Was so lovely and showed the girls a slice of New York hospitality they weren't expecting. We picked up the car at Newark airport and found it easy enough to head north for our first night.

You can't imagine better hosts than Dena and John! They got our holiday off on an excellent start by suggesting that we take a train from NY, which saved us hours of sitting in a traffic jam. They picked us up from the station and drove us to a nearby car rental.
The rooms are charming, with a fireplace to add comfort and atmosphere. There is an excellent pub on the other side of the garden, so we didn't even need to drive anywhere, and could enjoy a pint of beer with our meal.
When there, check out the nearby attractions - we walked under the impressive steel structure under the railroad tracks, and visited the oldest winery in the country.
We will be back next year, to see the Storm King sculpture park.

John and Dena do an excellent job of making their guests feel welcome and comfortable without being obtrusive. The Caldwell House is beautiful. We stayed in the Harmony room and found it spacious, well appointed and romantic. I would definitely highly reccomend this B&B.

John and Dena make you feel welcome from the very first e-mail. The house itself is beautiful, located in serene and inviting surroundings. Our room was clean, as advertised, quiet, comfortable and tastefully decorated.

The breakfasts at Caldwell House are a attraction in themselves – Dena's cooking and JOhn's newsletter is the perfect start to the day. And Dena's cookies... Wow!
Your hosts will go *way* out of their way to make sure you're comfortable and happy. We were deeply impressed – and would love to come back.

We highly recommend at stay at Caldwell House!

Room Tip: We stayed at the Trestle, and were very happy with that.

All the way around, this was a top-notch B&B experience. Not only were our hosts terrific and accommodating and helpful, but the place was immaculate from top to bottom. We were in the Butter Hill Room which was very pretty and had a nice large bathroom. The thing that is most important to me in any accommodation is the 'clean factor'. You could have done brain surgery in our shower stall, it was that spotless !!! The shower, toilet and sink looked like they had never been used, I thought they were fresh out of their packing crates. Every 'tech' amenity we could have required was in our bedroom. Although it appeared to be a 'full house', I couldn't hear the other occupants and was grateful to not be privy to everyone else's water-usage patterns, especially in the middle of the nite. I loved the graciousness of the house - the love and respect that went into its refurbishment is very obvious. I enjoyed its old hardwood floors, the supremely tasteful décor, the wealth of books, antiques and prints, the cookies/candies available in the big room with the bookcase that adjoins the dining room, enough varieties of coffee to open a Starbucks, and the big kitchen which was to die for. Did I mention the gourmet breakfast served in the dining room? We were able to secure only one nite's lodging [because we dragged our feet when arranging our trip]. That won't happen again. I am going to book NOW for leaf-season 2014 to make sure I can get two or three nites @ Caldwell. Caldwell is the absolute benchmark for Hudson River Valley B&B's. I never wanted to leave. See you next year !!!

Room Tip: Butter Hill Room couldn't be improved upon !

Wow, where do we begin other than - Thank you!!!
We owe so much to many generations of the Caldwells and the 2 other owners of the home for taking such goo, loving care of this wonderful home. Keeping it clean and fresh is a labor of love for us. We are so proud of the house and love sharing it with wonderful folks like you.

After reading over numerous glowing reviews, my husband and I decided to stay at Caldwell House while in New York for his West Point reunion. Everything--the atmosphere, our hosts, the food, the local attractions--far exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Harmony Hill room, which was amazing. It was very modern, with a wonderful jacuzzi tub, flat-screen TV (in both the room and the bathroom), a gas fireplace, and an iPad. It also felt very private. We had a very busy schedule thanks to the reunion, so we had to leave before breakfast on two of our three days there. But Dena packed us some yogurt, granola bars, and bananas on those days. As we were leaving to go to the football game early Saturday morning, I commented that the cherry danish Dena was making looked delicious. When we got back to our room that night, I found three cherry danish waiting for us. (They were awesome and the perfect treat for the end of a long day.) We were able to be there for Dena's incredible breakfast one day, though, and I'm glad we got that experience at least once. Dena was very warm, providing plenty of information on places to visit and things to do. We did have some downtime one day, and, thanks to her recommendation, we stopped by Brotherhood Winery for a wine tasting. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay, and we're looking forward to returning on our next visit to West Point.

We are so happy that we were able to help make your reunion weekend special. We also appreciate the kind words you have for our new Harmony Hill Room.
We spent a lot of time with the architect and contractor trying to create a seamless blend of the old with the new. We'll be opening 4 new rooms in our Carriage House in a couple of weeks. The rooms are modelled after the Harmony Hill Room, so it it really helpful to know that our plans have turned out well.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon,

John and Dena

A warm and professional welcome and an excellent, homecooked breakfast. It was a pleasure joining other guests at the table, where both guests and the hosts contributed. The room was really beautiful and cosy.
