“Exceeds Expectations”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

After reading over numerous glowing reviews, my husband and I decided to stay at Caldwell House while in New York for his West Point reunion. Everything--the atmosphere, our hosts, the food, the local attractions--far exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Harmony Hill room, which was amazing. It was very modern, with a wonderful jacuzzi tub, flat-screen TV (in both the room and the bathroom), a gas fireplace, and an iPad. It also felt very private. We had a very busy schedule thanks to the reunion, so we had to leave before breakfast on two of our three days there. But Dena packed us some yogurt, granola bars, and bananas on those days. As we were leaving to go to the football game early Saturday morning, I commented that the cherry danish Dena was making looked delicious. When we got back to our room that night, I found three cherry danish waiting for us. (They were awesome and the perfect treat for the end of a long day.) We were able to be there for Dena's incredible breakfast one day, though, and I'm glad we got that experience at least once. Dena was very warm, providing plenty of information on places to visit and things to do. We did have some downtime one day, and, thanks to her recommendation, we stopped by Brotherhood Winery for a wine tasting. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay, and we're looking forward to returning on our next visit to West Point.

We are so happy that we were able to help make your reunion weekend special. We also appreciate the kind words you have for our new Harmony Hill Room.
We spent a lot of time with the architect and contractor trying to create a seamless blend of the old with the new. We'll be opening 4 new rooms in our Carriage House in a couple of weeks. The rooms are modelled after the Harmony Hill Room, so it it really helpful to know that our plans have turned out well.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon,

John and Dena

A warm and professional welcome and an excellent, homecooked breakfast. It was a pleasure joining other guests at the table, where both guests and the hosts contributed. The room was really beautiful and cosy.

Our stay at Caldwell house was perfect in every way. Lovely room, comfy beds, friendly hosts, delicious breakfast, big front porch, quiet... Deena and John's restaurant recommendations and suggestions for things to do and places to hike were fantastic. The storm king sculpture gardens nearby were worth a drive from NY, and Bella Luna Italian restaurant rivaled the best of Greenwich Village and Little Italty.

Room Tip: The Catherine Caldwell room had a big jacuzzi tub and there is a new room with a fireplace that goes...

Green Features: They served organic locally grown foods and had lovely sheets. No smoking allowed inside the inn. They asked guests to hang towels that didn't need to be changed

This was an ideal getaway for our first journey through the lower and middle Hudson River Valley, and our hosts were extraordinary. John and Dena have managed this B & B for two years, and handle the responsibilities of running a boutique Bed and Breakfast with ease. Caldwell House is nestled in Salisbury Mills, a quaint village on the edge of Washingtonville (General Washington watered his horses here during the Revolutionary War). Dena is a gourmet cook, and John is her secret weapon, with a knack for entertaining the guests at the breakfast table on sports, politics, history - you name it. The setting is ideal for a couple to escape into a romantic weekend, which probably accounts for the number of couples celebrating their wedding anniversaries, whether the first, fifth or thirty-seventh. Our room on the front of the home was very comfortable, and we slept like babies in our king bed. Excellent accommodations in every respect, conveniently located within easy driving distance of the FDR home and Presidential museum in Hyde Park, the Culinary Institute of America, and West Point, not to mention the nearby Brotherhood Winery and its knockout restaurant, Vinum Café, run by a couple who would be just at home in a country restaurant in Provence. We'll be back.

Room Tip: We enjoyed a room facing the front of the B & B.

John is one of the most friendly guys you'll meet. He shows you around, he's willing to chime in to give you some knowledge about the area, and then he'll leave you to your own devices.

That's what we wanted. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast the next morning was plentiful.

It was too bad we had to leave so quickly as we have a very busy weekend planned for ourselves. But the other guys seemed very relaxed and you didn't hear them much or feel like you were staying in a full house.

Pictures on the wall show a very proud family history and very cool to look at.

I'd recommend staying here to people looking for a place upstate.

We were looking for an authentic American place to stay and Dena & John's beautiful house didn't disappoint. They take a lot of pride to maintain this 100+ years old house's original features.
Dena and John love children. Our 6 and 10 year old felt at home straight away stealing Dena's yummy cookies from the jar and then rushing out in the large garden to play.
We shared an excellent hearty breakfast and enjoyed the conversations with the other guests. Had a very please time. Highly recommended.
TIP: for diner try The Bright Star Diner & Restaurant on Route 32. Lovely staff, portions are enormous and food is excellent.

Thank you so much for such a kind and generous review. All feedback is incredibly important to us but we are particularly heartened by nice reviews from folks visiting from other countries.
We know that we can be the impression people have of Americans in general and it is so good to hear such nice words as yours.
Please come back and visit us next time the family is in the USA. We would love to see you again!

Dena & John are wonderful hosts, so warm & welcoming. They attract such friendly guests who sit around & talk over breakfast& Dena is a fine baker. The hosts are so accommodating, printing out directions to attractions & making suggestions for where to go for dinner.
The house is lovely, so well kept & clean. Our room(Butter hill) was beautiful &spacious( especially for a B&B), with luxurious robes & towels, had plenty of toiletries, covers, ac, i-pad & tv. ,too.
A gem of a place!
