I had a great time at Winter Clove this past weekend! This is a striking resort that is over 100 years old! It is run by a family, with a small support staff. There are 3 buildings that boast a bowling alley, 2 pools, and a truly grand front porch. There is also golfing, and a waterfall behind the main building.

The owners were very accomodating, and rarely said no to a request. We had nightly bonfires, and the bowling alley was packed with guests on Friday night. We had bowlers, pool players and the adventurous types who tried out the old-school arcade games. The juke box was playing, but you could barely hear it over all the fun people were having.

You might complain that there are no TVs in the rooms, except that I doubt you would notice with all the other available ctivities. Besides, there are 2 television sets in common areas: one in the living room area, and one in an upstairs lounging room. Who's there for TV anyway? Not me!

The Wedding took place on Saturday afternoon and went late into the evening. There was a band set up on the porch, and a cocktail hour. There were plenty of seats for people to sit and enjoy each other's company. Later, there was a buffet dinner, which was served in the dining room. Then, it was back to the porch for more music and dancing. There was plenty of room for all of this activity on the porch!

I had breakfast at about 10 AM on Sunday, with friends joining me over the next half hour. The staff were running around trying to take care of the crowd, which may have been bigger than expected. It seemed in the end that everyone got fed, and then got on the road to go home.

The Winter Clove is a simple place, with its roots in a much simpler time. The pace is slower, and the rocking chairs call out to you to come sit in them. I am glad I spent my weekend there, especially in order to attend a very special Wedding.

All in all, I would say the Wedding Weekend turned out to be a great success!

Breakfast ended way to early for a bed and "breakfast" (9AM). The door to my room was broken. Didnt even need a key to get in. Nice from out side but the hallways are dark and gloomy along with the bedrooms. Not necessary but no tv in the rooms. No fans and it was incredibly hot. Didn't care for the rude service when being served breakfast. Getting the wrong order over and over. For these prices you can easily get way more elsewhere. 2 nights with 2 people cost me just under $400. And they cleaned the room one time during this time period but felt they deserved $46.80 in gratuity. If $190 a night for two people sounds good to you have fun. Took me to the bank. Never again.

When I phoned I asked for a first floor room. Found out on arrival that there are no first floor rooms. Had to go up a flight of stairs or drive around the back to a small ramp. But the problem with that is each meal time or to sit on the main porch or go in the indoor pool you had to get into your car and drive around..then you still had to climb the flight of steps up onto the porch. Just not suitable for us.

Winter Clove Inn is the most glorious unspoilt place to bring young children too. We have been there in the depths of winter and just recently for Easter and the children were so sad to be leaving. Luxurious it is not. Dreamy it is. Situated in beautiful grounds that include a forest with waterfall, covered bridge and river, golf course, playground, tennis court, antique bowling alley, amongst other activities, the children were in heaven. They played soccer and tennis with other guests children whilst we sat drinking coffee on the enormous verandah watching them have the time of their lives. It is the opposite of a Disney Park. It is full on nature, sports, and fun and the children do have a lot of freedom (in a safe environment) to decide on their own activities. Even though the Inn was full last weekend, it never felt like that. Everybody goes off doing lots of local stuff like hiking, skiing (in winter), visiting towns like Woodbury. The meals are basic but very very filling and the children love the breakfast pancakes. Each evening there were things for them to do like movie night or a bonfire. We played bowling with them at night or swam in the indoor pool when it was cold. Truly you can never tire of this place and I can see that we will become another family in the Winter Clove Inn population of serial family visitors.

We stayed a weekend at Winterclove for the express purpose of hiking into the Catskill wilderness. Its the best spot we have found. The Winterclove Inn is, well, not for those who want pampering. If you want a spa-go to Mohonk and pay twice the price. If you want the Hampton Inn- go there. This place is different. Its kind of past its prime but still a step up from Motel 6. Actually it feels a bit like summer camp without the chores-and with hot water.
The staff are really all quite wonderful and helpful, although this time of year there are only a few. The room was very clean, although you could tell it had some rough treatment by careless guests. Clearly they did not appreciate the specialness and history. The blankets showed signs of maybe one too many washing- but better than none. And the memory foam bed was quite good.
All the meals are served in a dining room with various size tables. Food choices are mainly "take it or leave it"- not much choice that is. But very tasty and in quantity. This is not a place for dieters or those with special diets -at least without doing some advance planning.
The front desk has instructions on handouts for about seven or eight hikes- and from a couple you can go on and meet other trails. The hikes they list are not in any Catskill guides I have seen. Winterclove Falls is a nice destination, as is North Point.
We did not use the golf course -but it was very interesting as it went up the hill and into the woods. The indoor pool was clean and not overheated like many. We loved the collection of large tropical plants by it- real plants! We did not see the bowling alley. There is a nice looking tennis court also.
My biggest irritation was fellow guests. One evening we were treated to the wails and screams of several small children left to run around the first floor. The screams echoed up to the first floor. Maybe you came here to "relax" but why ruin it for everyone else?
We may seek a higher floor in the future, as I noticed the staircase to the higher levels is behind a door which would block some sounds. But I expect the Inn will never be as quiet as a hotel.
Next time I will also bring my own toiletries as I don't like those little foil packets, and will bring pool towels, since none seemed to be available for us this trip. One thing they could do, a la Hampton Inn, is to add the little retractable closeline in the bathrooms across the tub for the pool towels, as there was limited space to put wet things.
All in all, eager to go back.

Room Tip: Be aware that you need to carry your luggage up stairs. If you want views or morning sun, ask for th...

The winter clove is an old school catskill inn from days gone by. The inn is different from any place that i have been in. The staff is warm more like a cousin than people working the desk. The meals were country meat vegs potato. If you leave for lunch they pack you a picknick. Some rooms are redone some are not.The hotel is 150 years old.The best part of this inn are the guests,The salt of the earth some have been going there for 40 years. All in all its not the Waldorf but ill bet my last dollar that the waldorf dosent have a porch like this one and people being themself having fun Im going back next year same time to see some new friend we made.

Room Tip: room 14 if you kids its new and it has 2 rooms in one.

Winter Clove is a unique place that is not for everyone. If you are looking for the Waldorf Hotel or an upscale hotel experience, this is not for you. If you want to meet people, relax and enjoy the surroundings in a comfy setting away from it all, Winter Clove is ideal.
Dinner is at 6PM and we arrived from NYC at 8PM due to traffic. We called and related our tale of woe and Gale, our waitress was waiting for us with hot meals put aside for us and a smile on her face!!!! What a welcome relief after a 3 hour trip turned into 5+ and nerves on edge.
Some of our party stayed on the second floor. Large staircase to be considered if you are disabled or have lots of luggage but this was not a problem for us. Comfy rooms and good showers. Our room was over the kitchen which got loud in the morning. Wall A/C was a bit loud but needed in heat. The top floor had two meeting/living rooms surrounded by hotel rooms which would be ideal for larger groups not minding the staircase. No elevators but you wouldn't want to spoil the charm of this 150+ year old inn.
Others in our group stayed in the lodge down the driveway which was IDEAL for the kids in the group. We used this as a gathering place as there was a common living room with a small frig!
Grounds were beautiful and well maintained. Did not use the pools but they appeared fine!
Food at ALL meals was plentiful, tasty, and above par!
For those looking for activities nearby, ask at the desk. They are more than happy to give you ideas. We chose the garlic festival and was happy with the choice. We also went apple picking hearby. Enroute home we stopped at Woodstock and spent a few hours there.
Relaxing front porch with rockers and plenty of room to sit with or without anyone nearby. Ample parking.
German bakery in the area is a MUST ~ the pastery delights are unparralled!
Staff is friendly and accommodating. Gift shop is a must. Plenty of unusual country crafts all reasonably priced. Desk clerk also offered an assortment of her handmade jewelry at the welcome desk which I love to peruse and buy!
Skip the trivia game - questions do NOT run the gamut of trivia games - rather the interests of the presenter.
Second stay there and have booked for next year already.

Room Tip: Rooms above the kitchen tend to be noisy in the morning.
