Stayed one night here during the recent Jazz Festival (which was excellent!) The room was VERY nice; fresh and comfortable. Very modern décor, with clean lines. We liked it and found it very stylish. Felt like an expensive hotel in a larger city. The bathroom was very cool, and well renovated. Very functional, with only a shower as noted by Beverly B. But it was a big shower with nice tile and shelves to put your stuff. The toilet was in a little alcove for some privacy and the sink was nice and big, with good lighting. The large pictures made from photos of local sites was a great touch. Even the bathroom had one! We even had a balcony but used the A/C due to the heat.
The rate was over $200 with tax for a King room which was not huge, and that was the AAA rate! That's a bit high for Upstate NY; I would have expected $150 - $175 but perhaps they marked up due to the festival (hate when hotels do that!)
The area felt very safe with beautiful old mansions along East Ave. It was walking distance to several restaurants which we easily found with a short walk. We went to 2Vine for which I will write a separate review later. We did not eat at the hotel at all because we were on the go. At night when we returned from the festival, the hotel had a fire in the front yard in a fire pit, with lots of Adirondack chairs surrounding it. A bunch of people were there, laughing and having a blast! What a great, homey touch! That seems to be a fixture which is such an Upstate NY thing to do; a charming touch for a chain hotel to provide!
The only thing that wasn't great was the reception when we walked in. After leaving our car with the very professional female valet who pounced on our car as soon as we drove up(!) and gave us a welcome, we proceeded to the reception area. When you walk inside, you face a wall and it is not immediately obvious where you are supposed to go until you turn around to your left and see a small podium! There was a young gentleman at it, very young looking, as if he was still in High School, which added to the feeling of "where do I check in?". Not his doing of course, but he did not greet us or offer to check us in until we walked over to his desk. He was efficient but cool; not very friendly. I inquired about getting a travel agent rate (I own one) and his response was odd. He said he never heard of such a thing and never saw one in his system!! REALLY? And you are part of the Hilton hotel chain? I can see the travel agent rates when I book in their system and every chain hotel has them. They had not been available when I booked but often open up if the hotel is not full, so I always ask. Well, he looked at me like I had 3 heads and a lot of nerve to ask such a thing! NOT the response a travel agent should hear upon check in! Usually as soon as I show my agent card, I get big smiles and welcomes and I at least get a little amenity or an upgrade. This guy obviously doesn't know the business and that travel agents are a major part of the industry and potentially will send him lots of new business!! His ignorance was very insulting and unprofessional. All he had to do is say they did not have any agent rates available, and that would have been fine. But to insist they don't exist at HILTON? Come on, kid, get some training.
Aside from the bad check in experience, the hotel itself was fine. In fact, we ended up in the elevator a couple of times with a maintenance man who was working very hard and was VERY friendly. I think his name may have been Harold or something with an H. He was on the short side and perhaps Spanish. Really nice guy. If HE gets it, why doesn't the check in guy??
