This restaurant is a fine example of home made Ethiopian cuisine. It is fresh, tasty and beautifully prepared. A new location and proximity to college town is a smart move. Very reasonably priced for the quality. We have experienced Ethiopian cuisine in other cities and they just don't compare. I highly recommend it.

One of our favorite cuisines is Ethiopian. In fact, every time we visit a new city, we try to search
out an Ethiopian restaurant. (We estimate we've eaten in perhaps 25 Ethiopian restaurants in
about 20 cities.) For many years, however, we knew that Rochester had one of the very best
Ethiopian restaurants in North America. This was Abyssinia Restaurant, which had been
located on University Avenue.

Unfortunately, Abyssinia was closed last year, to the dismay of this restaurant’s loyal fans.
We kept noticing enticing hints that it was reopening, but no firm information about a date.
Then we received an email from a friend, who is our best source of information about interesting local restaurants. He had called Abyssinia’s phone number, and they are now open at their new location!

Abyssinia Restaurant

We had a superb meal at Abyssinia yesterday! As before, one of the highlights is their absolutely
fabulous injera (like a thick, elastic crepe, with a slightly sourdough flavor). We always order one
meal that is a vegetarian combination. We really enjoy these dishes, because the wonderful sauces
permeate every bite! Our favorite vegetarian items at Abyssinia are the split red lentils, the collard
greens with garlic, and a salad with fresh tomatoes and onions..

The meat dishes are also delicious. In other Ethiopian restaurants, the sauce seems to be an afterthought. Here, however, the chicken and lamb dishes are really enhanced by the wonderful sauces. A vegetarian combination plate and a meat combination plate made a perfect dinner for two, at a very reasonable price. Also, some Ethiopian restaurants prepare their dishes with too much oil, but Abyssinia has the perfect ratio!

In addition, the decor at the new Abyssinia is appealing, with small tables that are perfect for two or
three people sharing a platter of food. They also have tables for four people, as well as for larger parties.

The reason we're writing is that we want the new Abyssinia Restaurant to survive and thrive! Let's make this wonderful restaurant a success!

Note: Abyssinia Restauarant is about 2.2 miles north of Jefferson Road, on the west side of Mt. Hope, in a small shopping plaza with a variety of other small restaurants. It's just south of Strong Memorial Hospital..

The food was delicious and the service was good. We were the only people in the restaurant at an off time. I had the honey wine and we shared a large plate off food. It was very satisfying. I agree with the other reviews here.

My fiance and I love Abyssinia. The spongy bread used to scoop up the meal is strangely addictive. I recommend trying "tej", a honey wine. Also, if you are new to Ethiopian cuisine, order a combination plate rather than a regular entree, in order to sample multiple dishes. One more tip- always dine in. I always have a great meal when I dine in, but when I've ordered takeout, the food tends to be soggy and maybe smaller-portioned also.
