This unassuming little red house offers an amazing glimpse into history. Built in 1792, the stove less, refrigerator less kitchen with no running water shows us just how resourceful and hardy our ancestors truly were. We wish we would have been able to see the 2nd floor rooms but enjoyed the main level and stroll through the gardens.

Visit the Stone-Tolan House to see what life was like in the 1800's! House has been beautifully restored. It was orginally built as a tavern.

This former inn, that at the time was in the middle of nowhere, is now surrounded by modern homes and a busy, but beautiful East Avenue. But the home is well able to transport visitors to what it felt like to arrive by stage coach or horseback for a light supper and a cup of ale - and a warm, lumpy bed. The area around the house still has orchards of old, bulgy fruit trees fenced with split rails. The volunteers are well versed and friendly. The times I have taken children, we have been the only visitors, so we always get treated like "special" visitors. Very welcoming and interesting. Great place for kids!!

I first visited this place chaperoning during a school visit. I was fascinated. For me it is one of the must see places for visitors, especially international visitors.

The docent's are amazing. You really get a sense of Rochester as a frontier town with carriage houses and inn's and stuff!
