I have only been to one other art gallery and that is in Toronto. The MAG is a great place with many works to see. It gives you the feel of a larger gallery but in a much smaller package. Each time I manage to come here I manage to see something that I didn't take much note of the time before. Definitely worth seeing if you can fit it into your day.

The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY had a lot to offer on display when I was there. Yes, it was a bit eclectic, but still the visit was quite rewarding. Also, this is nice building to visit.

For a city this size, this museum is WAY above average. They have a well curated, exceptional collection. Go on Sundays at 2pm for the organ concert played on the antique italian organ

I feel bad that I don't come here more often. There's always an interesting new exhibit to check out and then visit and re-visit some favorites from the permanent collection.

I hate to start a review with the it's-not-NYC-or-Chicago caveat but it is necessary in this case. Art museums need donors, sponsors and patrons. Small cities have fewer of these than large cities. It is an unavoidable equation. But that's what makes Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery such a pleasant surprise. The collection is small but quite diverse, with respectable American, European, Asian and Ancient holdings. The museum also has enough clout to pull in traveling exhibits like the current "In Company with Angels," a display of seven stained-glass church windows from the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany that were recently discovered and painstakingly restored. Memorial Art Gallery is a museum for vistors to enjoy and Rochester to be proud of.
