“Beautiful Displays - Definitely Visit”
Reviewed July 17, 2011

My 17 yr. old daughter and I went to the Memorial Art Gallery and spent two hours browsing through the displays and history. Beautiful pieces and building as well. The staff were very pleasant (even though I goofed and had my flash left on my camera). Nice little gift shop and a pleasant area to just sit outside of the gallery and have a relaxing break with the fountain and among the greenery.

If the place can hold the attention of a teenager and get the reaction "can you believe this is actually a painting!?" or - "how did they do that", I think you have a winner.

“Terrific Teaching Collection -- It's small but with many gems”
Reviewed July 9, 2011

The MAG has interesting special exhibits. The latest was contemporary fiber art.

However the MAG's strength is that, despite its relatively small size, it has terrific examples (albeit often only one) of important artists and styles from around the world. Currently its first floor exhibits are American art from John Singleton Copley and Charles Wilson Peale through Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, Remington, & Catlin, to Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, George Bellows, Alexander Calder, Wendell Castle, Chihuly, Stuart Davis, Dewing, Dove, Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Gaston Lachaise, Jacob Lawrence, Lipchitz, Mestrovic, Noguchi, Georgia O'Keefe, Claes Oldenburg, Albert Paley, Jackson Pollock, John Singer Sargent, George Segal, John Sloan, David Smith, Tiffany, Twachtman, Warhol, and Max Weber. The first floor also has a small collection of art from Africa & Oceania.

The second floor begins with a small room of exquisite Egyptian artifacts including an elaborately decorated coffin. The European Collection begins with medieval stained glass and illuminated manuscripts, continues with Durer, Tintoretto, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Luca della Robbia, Bernini, Van Dyck, Franz Hals, Rembrandt, Rubens, Jan Steen, El Greco, Ribera, Boucher, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Romney, Hogarth, and Fragonard, to Cezanne, Corot, Courbet, Degas, Monet, Rodin, Gabriel Rossetti, Vuillard, Ingres, Bonnard, Braque, de Chirico, Kandinsky, Klee, Leger, Matisse, Renoir, Rouault, de Vlaminck, Henry Moore, and Picasso. The Second Floor also has a small collection of Asian, Greek & Roman artifacts.

On the first floor there is also an interesting gift shop and a restaurant. Often the MAG offers concerts, with admission to the concert including the Gallery admission.
