Owner description: Mount Hope, dedicated in 1838, is America's first municipal Victorian Cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery contains priceless pieces of art and rare horticultural specimens. It is the final resting place of many dignified and internationally known individuals, including Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and is on the National Park Services National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Hope is listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District, featuring 83 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in the Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, a Victorian Gothic gatehouse, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres.

“One of the most beautiful cemeteries in Western NY”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

No matter what time of year you visit, this place is hauntingly beautiful. It has a rich history - a lot of Rochester's founders and natives are buried here - and amazing views. It is situated amongst rolling hills, filled with old tombstones, crypts, and natural trees and plants that seem to be perfectly placed. I would highly recommend a visit, every season if possible!

“An interesting drive”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Designed by Olmstead, this cemetery combines historical interest with some very beautiful scenery. It's a great place to wander, by car or on foot. One of the few real treasures in Rochester.

“A slightly spooky but attractive graveyard with lot of history”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

I had been in this massive cemetery in the past, but I'd never taken as in-depth a tour as I did today. The cemetery was very eerie in the low-misting light, with a blanket of snow covering the tombstones. I found that taking pictures yielded some very interesting and somber images.

I drove through most of the cemetery rather than walked, as it's still cold and messy out. The cemetery does offer historic tours through the grounds, which include the final resting places of Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony. While I didn't visit either of their graves, I did notice quite a few tombs of Rochester's famous families, known through business or education. I was also impressed by the age on many of the weathered stones, some dating all the way back to the 1790s. (There may have even been earlier, but I didn't see them.)

This is an amazing place to visit, stroll and reflect on life in general. I think I will come back and take the organized walking tour sometime this summer.

“Rate a Cemetary?”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Was there for the funeral of a relative. I never rated a cemetary before, but I guess as cemeteries go, this one is fine.

“My favorite place to bring people from out of town”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

I love history, and Fredrick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony are buried here. But aside from the famous and semi-famous people buried there, it's just a beautiful place to walk and picnic. When we have visitors in nice weather, this is the first place I think of taking them.
