Owner description: Mount Hope, dedicated in 1838, is America's first municipal Victorian Cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery contains priceless pieces of art and rare horticultural specimens. It is the final resting place of many dignified and internationally known individuals, including Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and is on the National Park Services National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Hope is listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District, featuring 83 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in the Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, a Victorian Gothic gatehouse, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres.

Love this cemetery. Been many times. The torch lit tour was awful.
well you might enjoy it if you like listening to a tour guide that ends every sentence with an upward inflection, like they are asking a question.

Tour guide was too young, didnt remember dates, or names. Found it best to ignore the tour guide and enjoy the sites.

It has many graves (as a cemetery would) and you can see how rich Rochester used to be, but it is just a cemetery. I would recommend taking a tour though.

Mt. Hope is a beautiful and peaceful place to walk or run (I am particularly fond of the North section, it's a little hilly). Make sure to check out the many beautiful headstones & mausoleums, as well as old trees and different types of birds (you might even get lucky and see a deer, or fox). And, by all means, do take one of the many guided tours. There is something for everyone here.

Mt, Hope is large and very hilly. I've been there on sevearal occasions and at different times of year. There are sevearal famous people burried there and lots of history. I've been on a couple of the tours - they were always very good
