Owner description: Mount Hope, dedicated in 1838, is America's first municipal Victorian Cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery contains priceless pieces of art and rare horticultural specimens. It is the final resting place of many dignified and internationally known individuals, including Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and is on the National Park Services National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Hope is listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District, featuring 83 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in the Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, a Victorian Gothic gatehouse, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres.

Great learning lesson for anyone that can see past the "it's just a cemetary" part

“If you have not visited Fredrick Douglas's grave, do it before it is too late! :)”

This is a fantastic cemetery in many aspects: it has rolling glacial hills and valleys, bordered by a University, containing distinguished historical figures, and Natural oaks. See it!

Every school child should be taken on a tour of the cemetery. I "stumbled" on SBA's grave. There is so much wonderful history here and it is so massive of an area that to do it justice, one really needs to spend a little time doing some research to have a game plan.

“A guided tour of Mt. Hope Cemetary is a great way to spend an afternoon”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

The tour guide was very informative and told us such wild stories about some of the more prominent people buried at Mt. Hope. She also pointed out interesting (and beautiful) trees, a crater from a meteor, flowers, etc. I will probably take the tour again because I understand that each tour guide takes a different route.
