“Glad we Tried It”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

Lived in the Rochester area 65 years but had never heard of Zeppa Bistro. Wanted someplace close to Geva Theatre, but wanted something different as well. Found Zeppa on the Internet so we gave it a try. Almost reminded me of an old "speakeasy" kind of place. It is in the basement floor of the old German House, and has that old charm look and feel. Lots of candles lit to set the mood, a huge bar, and plenty of dining space. Not a big menu, but there were lots of specials to add to the choices. Very different menu items, with combinations of different ingredients and entree items you would normally expect. As we were going to a play after, we didn't want to eat too heavy.

I ordered the Chopped Burger, which came with bibb lettuce, tomato, a fried egg, and fries. The fries were with the skin on and were exceptional. The burger was so tall I tried cutting it in half to eat it. But it was also so juicy that it was a gigantic mess. So I ate the rest open faced and enjoyed every morsel. Even the pickles on the side were great, sliced almost 1/2 inch and very garlicky. Our friend ordered a "starter" lamb kabobs as his entree, and could barely finish it, it was huge. Our wives had Pot Belly Pork and Black Bean Quesadilla, and both loved them.

Excellent wine choices, and I had Prosecco. With drinks the bill for my wife and I was $40, and we were both very full and very satisfied. Definetly will go again, and next time try one of the nightly menu specials not on the menu.

“Comfort food from multiple genres”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

Nice pre-heater dinner at Zeppa bistro. We had early reservations and were seated immediately after arriving. The atmosphere is and low key but a bit stark. Our server was friendly and attentive but not very knowledgeable about the menu or wine list. The food was tasty and well seasoned. The polenta fries appetizer with goat cheese and mushrooms is "to die for" but very filling so split one order amongst friends. The main dishes were savory, including a pork tenderloin with butternut squash and a jerk chicken dish. (the salsa accompanying the chicken had a bit too much pineapple) Overall, a nice meal at a good price. How about adding a few Finger Lakes wines to the menu?

“Excellent food!”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

We took our daughter and some of her college friends to dinner while we visited Rochester. The food was excellent, from the delicious butternut squash soup to the mussels appetizer to the main courses and on to dessert. Everyone enjoyed their food immensely, and the wait staff was pleasant and knowledgeable.

The only negative - and it's not really bad! - is the physical space itself. They need a designer to come in and warm the place up and make it hang together as a cohesive space.

We will definitely go back for the food!

“Fabulous Food. Disappointing Ambiance.”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

We recently had dinner at Zeppa based on recommendations from other couples that ate there. We fully agreed that our dinners were some of the best meals we have eaten anywhere in the USA. My short-rib dinner was outstanding. Our waiter was pleasant and helpful.

However, the restaurant is located in the basement of the building with a relatively low ceiling. The restaurant appears dark and uninviting. Even the table cloths are black. Our friends also commented on the excellence of the food but will probably not return because of the atmosphere.

We suggest that the owners consider using a mixture of brightly colored tablecloths and purchase torchiere lighting or install interesting ceiling lights if the ceiling height will accommodate them.

It would be a shame if a restaurant that can serve such outstanding food does not stay in business because the atmosphere is lacking.
