Review of Swan Market

Swan Market
Ranked #4 of 1,313 Restaurants in Rochester
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $5 - $10
Description: All meat at Swan Market is hand-cut, all sausage hand-made by owner Barry Fischer, who apprenticed with German master butchers to bring you a taste of Germany that's authentic down to the last detail. Swan's renowned German lunches are served Wednesday through Saturday from 11 to 2. Grab a seat at one of the communal tables and hoist a glass of imported German beer. It's impossible to go away hungry! There's also live German music on the last Thursday and Friday of each month. Wan can also cater events of any size, with anything from cold-cut trays to a full pig roast.

This is one of our favorite places to grab lunch after a morning at the Rochester Public Market (or any other excuse we can come up with). It is nothing fancy to if you are even the slightest bit of a stick in the mud you should skip it!

You will likely have to wait in line before being seated at one of the spots at the communal tables. That's right, communal tables. You're going to be eating next to strangers. You will have fun conversations with strangers. You may have to share the bottles of mustard. Its all part of the charm. Waiting in line can be a hoot too. The first time I went with my Husband we waited in line for about 15 minutes. While standing there we chatted with the owner, he offered us a beer and some sausage while we waited and we browsed the shelves filled with German goodies.

When a spot opened up we sat next to some very friendly older gentleman and ordered the yummiest German food I've ever had in the Rochester area. Anything you order will be yummy but my personal favorite is the Jaeger Schnitzel with Spetzle and Warm Potato Salad. OH! And don't forget the mushroom gravy on top! YUM!

This place is the real deal and is bursting at the seems with character and authenticity. Don't miss an opportunity to visit!

**You should note that the location isn't great. Not a lot of parking and the neighborhood can be a bit scary. Park close and lock your doors. We do and have never had a problem.**

The food is excellent and the authentically German. Great with a beer. The restaurant is really part of the store which is also a meat market, and tables are tight. They do their best to seat those who have been waiting the longest. Despite the lack of ambience, it is worth the trip. At the peak lunch hour, expect a wait. I have visited on several occasions and always try something different and never been disappointed. You can also buy fantastic sausage to enjoy at home. The store also has a good selection of German food items.

One word to describe everything and that's "GREAT".The meals, the fresh meats and red cabbage, potato salad, the beer, the service and the friendliness of the owner Barry and his staff. Also the crowd of people who dine there. Everybody is eating and smiling. And the prices are good also!

Eat there! Swan's serves REAL food to real people. No, there is no lettuce. Please do not be like the woman at my long family-seating table who had a fit because there was no salad with low calorie dressing! At Swan's you get stick-to-your-ribs meat and potatoes, and cabbage and beer. Get the Jaeger or Rahm Schnitzel - a breaded fried cutlet topped with house-made dark or cream sauce/gravy with mushrooms. The Eater is partial to the red cabbage over the sauerkraut. The German potatoes are a MUST!! They also make a to-die-for potato and sausage soup. Beer is plentiful and rye bread, mustard, and butter is always on the table. Sausages, bacon, and ham are made and smoked on the premises. They are closed Sun-Tuesday so they can re-stock their meat products. Everything is great; although, I'm not a fan of the rouladen or the pork roast with stuffing. Could have just been a bad day when I had both on a sampler platter. The best part about Swan's is that you can eat in or . . . purchase the schnitzel, potatoes, cabbage, and sauce/gravy to go. A bit of oil in a pan and a microwave at home provides the same meal at a lower cost and convinces dinner guests that you are an amazing cook!

There are only a few local places to get good German Food and this is the best. Great friendly service and great sausages to take home from the deli case. It was very busy on Friday but the food was just as good take out. I will definitely be returning.
