If you are looking for a place to escape the hustle-bustle of everyday life and are ready to slip into the serenity of a picturesque country setting with plenty of indoor/outdoor activities to do nearby, then Dawgwood Cabin is the place for you. This is the second time my mom and I stayed here. We were just as impressed with the comfortable, cozy feel of the cabin, the peaceful beauty of the surrounding countryside and the hospitality and attentiveness to details displayed by the hosts, Michelle and Wayne, as we were the first time. I loved starting my day by enjoying the view of lush, green farm fields from the porch while eating breakfast, and returning to that spot in the evening to witness some of the best sunsets. My mom and I finished most days with a few hours spent sitting beneath the starry sky while watching crackling, orange and blue flames dance around in the fire pit.
If you are looking to venture out and explore the area, well, there is plenty to do. North of the cabin in the little town of Herkimer, you can take a ninety-minute narrated boat tour of the Erie Canal. While in Herkimer, you might want to try lunch or dinner at Crazy Otto's Empire Diner on West Albany Street. Take a forty-five- minute drive east of the cabin to visit Howe's Cave. Or go south to Cooperstown where you can visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, take a boat ride on Otsego Lake and do many other activities. If you return to the cabin by driving north on 28 from Cooperstown, you may want to stop off at Fly Creek Cider Mill. But if you want a delicious soft-serve ice cream cone, wait until you arrive to Jerry's Place a little farther north of Fly Creek on Rte. 28. There is much more to do in the area. Just check out the brochures and list of restaurants the hosts have made available at the cabin.
Finally, for the exercise enthusiast. If you like to run, there is a nice 3.5 - 4 mile (by my estimate) loop with rolling hills with almost no traffic (I saw only two cars the day I ran it.) you can run.
We loved it. We are 4 60 year guys in town (Richfield Springs) for a huge flight attendant reunion, and my friends are hard to please, and we all loved it. I was afraid being out of town from the reunion would be a hassle, but it really wasn't. It's so peaceful, occasional Amish farmers going by on the horse drawn carts (especially Sunday morning). We took advantage of the fire pit after the first 2 nights of our reunion, hope we weren't too loud.
Dawgwood Cabin was a perfect getaway stay for us! The cabin was spotless & well appointed. Michele, the host, had English muffins & coffee ready for us when we arrived in June . It’s a great place for retreat after touring Cooperstown & surrounding activities. We loved seeing the cows gather by the fence in the evening! Very sweet!
This cozy cabin is a gem nestled in the lush-green countryside. So much more than pictures reveal - from the front porch where you can become lost in the serenity of a colorful sunset to the wonderfully done interior decorating that welcomes you to a temporary home. Start your day on the front porch surrounded by the tranquility and beautiful sights of nature while you enjoy English muffins and fruit provided by your gracious hosts. End your peaceful day sitting around the fire pit beneath a starry, moon-lit night. This is exactly what my mom and I did during a four-night stay. It was the perfect location for us as we wrapped up some loose ends for our family history research. We have been in the area -for family history research- three times before. Those times we stayed in a motel and ate out every day. A motel room is nowhere near as relaxing as a cabin. We also appreciated being able to cook our own meals and enjoyed use of the outdoor grill. The cabin is a very nice set-up, more spacious than I expected, and seemed to provide everything we needed - towels, linens, dishes, etc. Michelle and Wayne, thank you for opening your doors, and for all the special attention to the details.
This cabin is so quaint and well appointed . Michelle and her husband are wonderful host they make sure you have a wonder stay from start to finish, they are very attentive to your needs. Both my husband and I enjoyed staying here it was nice to sit back and relax nothing but peace and quite. One day we watch the Amish with their buggy go down the road, and we took a walk down the safe and quite road . This place is well suited for couples looking to get away, and families will find that this cabin is a great place to regroup. I could keep going on and on about this wonderful cabin best advice is book you wont be disappointing.
This is our second visit to this cabin. We came here back in 2014 as well for a family reunion. All of the hotels in the area are very dated and do not feel clean. This cabin is very clean and decorated very nicely. It is perfect for a family of 4. Michele left fruit, english muffins, coffee and creamer amongst a lot of other small things that are very helpful. It is a beautiful area. My only complaint would be that the master bed is very hard and it is difficult to get a consistent water temperature in the shower. It seems to either be scorching or freezing, but maybe that was user error! We will definitely come back. Thanks for a great visit!
