“Interesting Choices and Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013 via mobile

I tend to eat in the cafe/bar area. It can be noisy at times but the food is good and has some interesting choices.... Small plates...especially macadamia encrusted calamari, great hamburgers with the best shoestring fries... Try it with their aioli sauce. Also an excellent Caesar salad.

“Still great after all these years”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

Not having dined at Terrapin for many years we were looking for place to go with friends that we hadn't been to in a while and we chose to dine in Terrapin's Dining Room. We chose the Dining Room over the Red Bistro as we know the latter appeals more to families and we wanted a more adult evening. We were promptly seated, presented with our menus, a drink menu and a wine list.

Just a note on the drink menu: Terrapin offers some unique cocktails you aren't like to find in a lot of places, but that uniqueness comes at a price. One of our dining companions commented on the $20 margarita, made with all premium spirits and juices. So we stuck to our standby beverages of choice which were all excellent as was the glass of wine one of us had.

Our server, Katie, couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. She gave us time to look over the menu, answered any questions we had, and was efficient without being overbearing. Just what you want in a server.

We all ordered an appetizer/salad/soup, entree and dessert and the total with tax and tip was $85/couple - very reasonable for the overall experience, we felt. For appetizers we had a "very good" gazpacho, and an equally good mesculun salad, and excellent bbq duck quesadilla, and an outstanding seared tuna. Entrees were equally well done: Two wonderful pasta dishes, a delicious red snapper and a perfectly cooked hangar steak with green peppercorn sauce. We finished with some great desserts.

As for the reviewer that "didn't get past the entrance" too bad for you, you missed a great meal. Does the restaurant need a little freshening up? Yes - I did notice the seat cushion fabric needed replacing and a fresh coat of paint would be nice. Did that affect our experience? Not in the least. Terrapin is an excellent choice in Rhinebeck. While not the least expensive, certainly not the most.

“Lots of Choices for Vegetarians”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

The restaurant it located in an old church with shingled sides. Inside you can see where the organ used to sit and there is a choir loft still there with seating in it.
We sat outside in a fenced area so that we could watch the street traffic. The garlic soup was recommended by our friend and it was very garlicky and buttery with a big crouton floating in it. Three of us had the veggie burger and you got to choose your bread, which included rolls, baguettes, and sliced breads, your cheese which included sliced or spreads, your sauces and toppings. The side with the burger is fries or slaw. the fries were skinny cut and crispy. Our friend had the green leaf wrap, which had beans, avocado, tomato, herbs, corn and other fresh ingredients all placed on a green leaf that you could roll if there wasn't so much food on top of it, so our friend had to eat it with a fork. They give you two and she couldn't possibly finish it. I noticed many other vegetarian choices.
Food is abundant and the prices were good here. We sat on the street, which was a bit noisy at times when a truck or two ran through.

“Excellent Niche Restaurant with Nice Comfort food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

My wife and I had a wonderful lunch experience at this restaurant in Rhinebeck on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. There is a large outdoor dining area in front of the restaurant, but we chose to dine indoors. The decor is o.k. but nothing breathtaking. The service was reasonably fast, friendly, and on point. The menu is Not very expansive.
The food is very good. WE ordered the chicken tenders with hot buffalo sauce and blue cheese dip for the appetizer and fish tacos with guacamole and the works for the entree.
The fish tenders were all home made from scratch with a really tasty hot buffalo sauce and a freshly made blue cheese dip. The fish tacos were wonderful as ell. My only issue was the soft tacos were a little too small for all the diced tomatoes and guacamole .

“Really good food, but...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

We noticed this restaurant as soon as we drove into town. It looks impressively elegant and chic, from the outside. A couple days into our visit, we went there for an early dinner.

It is in an Arts-and-Crafts style church, which makes for a great kind of 'funky.' The food was good, and the service was excellent.

We called around 4:30, and asked if we'd need a reservation if we arrived in the next few minutes. They said we wouldn't but dinner opened at 5:00. When we got there just after 5, the hostess directed us to a 6-person table, and when we asked for one of the several 2-person tables at the window, said there were several reservations that evening. When we asked her to check for sure whether one of the windows was available, she relented and let us take one.

That was strange, but the only real negative in the experience, for our tastes, was the atmosphere. The interior design, the cuisine, the attentive service, and the wine list suggest very clearly 'fine dining.' But the music was very loud, abrasive, and erratic. It ran the range of Cuban, to soft jazz, to saccharine 70's pop, making for a dining experience that was more dance-hall karaoke night than dining room.

Also seriously marring an otherwise good meal, with a good view seated street-side between the large windows, was a screaming child. While it's not the restaurant's fault that parents tolerate and even encourage antisocial behavior in young children, bringing them to such places before they've learned how to behave in public, rather than leaving them at home with a babysitter, it made an already uncomfortable noise level truly unpleasant.

Parents who do that, of course, can't teach the good manners they obviously do not have themselves. I don't know what a restaurant can do in such instances but it seems like there must be something...like, direct families with children to their bistro area? The couple at the table next to us were openly discussing the disruption, so clearly we were not the only ones feeling the impact even if the brat's parents were oblivious. Can a restaurant provide 'fine dining' and also be 'family-friendly'?

In spite of the good food, I'd try another of Rhinebeck's many restaurants before revisiting this one. One thing is sure: it is sadly not suitable for a romantic dinner date.
