Owner description: Wilderstein Historic Site, with its exquisite Queen Anne mansion and Calvert Vaux designed landscape, is widely regarded as one of the Hudson Valley’s most important examples of Victorian architecture. The estate was the home of Margaret (Daisy) Suckley, whose extraordinarily close relationship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt has been well-chronicled and is the subject of much interest. Wilderstein’s guided tour includes the elaborate 1888 interiors of the first floor of the mansion, the exterior architecture, landscape, annual exhibition, and video. The regular season for guided tours is May through October. In addition, the mansion is open and decorated for the holidays from Thanksgiving weekend until the end of December. There is also a network of hiking trails on the property, special events throughout the year, a gift shop, and spectacular Hudson River views.

“Fine Victorian home and splendid hiking”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

We happened upon this historical house simply on a whim when we saw the historic landmark sign on our way home from an event. What a special find! The victorian home of the Suckley's has been thoughtfully restored to its glory complete with interior decor from Tiffany's. The grounds designed by Vaux (the same designer that did central park) are gorgeous upstaged only by the inspiring views of the Hudson river. Even if you don't tour the house ($10 tour fee per person) the grounds and plentiful hiking trails are worth the visit, and are free. Go toward the end of the day and you may find you are there alone :-)

“Beautiful Mansion related to FDR”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2012

Wilderstein was the home of a favorite "cousin" of FDR. While Daisey Suckley took care of FDR when he was ill there are many rumors about the relationship. Located in Rhinebeck NY withgreat views of the Hudson River this mansion is a treat for a slow day. You can be 100 yards from the Mansion and not know it is there. The seclusion is amazing. For the $10 admission price you get to see how that section of our community lived. There is an interesting exhibit at the lower level where you can start your tour. It consists of items from that era. They are numbered and you have to guess what they are. People from my generation (1950s) will know some. Younger folks may not but it is interesting. Iam not in to old houses but this is an interesting spot. For me I would not give up something to go but if there is nothing to do for a few hours it can make for an interesting day.
