Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel
Ranked #5 of 13 Hotels in Poughkeepsie
Reviewed December 18, 2013

We recently stayed here for one night in connection with attending an out-of-town wedding. We received a "special" rate as part of the wedding. Still, it was not really a good value hotel. First of all, there was extremely limited hot water (that took forever to get there) the night we arrived. The next morning, it was a little bit better, but still took almost 5 minutes to get hot. The bed was TERRIBLE! The mattress was a thin inner spring mattress and we literally could "bounce" on the bed when we sat down or lay down on it. It was very uncomfortable and felt like it was only a bunch of springs with a cover on it. Virtually no "padding" at all! I think even Super 8 or EconoLodge bedding is better than this! Furnishings were only OK. Staff was friendly. Food in restaurant was very good and a good value, but the room's comfort far outshadowed the overall stay.

In addition, we mistakenly forgot an item in our room when we checked out. We called the hotel when we got home and realized our mistake. The hotel assured us they would take care of returning it to us. They did. However, they charged us $12 for their "time and effort," and then also charged the shipping and handling to us. We feel this was an excessive amount of money for the item that had been forgotten!

Room Tip: Rooms are equal regardless of location.

We have stayed at this hotel several times over the past few years when visiting family in the area because we love the view of the Hudson river and the two nearby bridges extending over it. The complimentary breakfast is excellent and makes this hotel a better value than the budget type hotels we have tried in the area, especially during the off season when the prices are lower.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room with a view of the river.

We have stayed at the Grand Hotel several times in the past few years. On a college tour, this was the best deal close to SUNY New Paltz. This time we wanted to go to dinner at CIA & tour West Point on our first day. The next two days we took the train to NYC (90 mins.) to visit our daughter who is doing an internship. The Grand was half the price of hotels in Manhattan. The parking is free and there is a free, local shuttle (inc the train station). The breakfast was better than most, cooked to order, served in the Market St. Grill.
The only con was our mattress was too firm.
If we are in the area again, we would stay here for the price.

As other reviewers noted, call and nicely request a river on a higher floor, if available.

Room Tip: Call and nicely request a river view room on an upper floor as other people mentioned. They're r...

We attended a wedding in the beginning of November and stayed the nite. I thought it was a very nice hotel. We were able to check in early and I was actually very impressed with the interior of the hotel. The rooms were very clean and the bed quite comfortable. I myself am happy that this hotel is strict about their smoking policies. I am NOT a smoker and would be very Upset if someone in another room lit up.

The wedding in the hotel was lovely. The food was outstanding as was the breakfast in a private dining room the next morning.

This hotel was a great venue for a wedding.

An old property that has been somewhat rehabilitated. Our room was comfortable with excellent beds, spectacular view over the Hudson River, and spotlessly clean. The staff are very nice, and feel dedicated to the success of their hotel. Breakfast is included in the room price, and was outstanding, buffet style, far better quality and preparation than what one normally receives when breakfast is included. Parking in an adjacent garage was free. Excellent value for money. Completely recommendable!

Room Tip: The view over the Hudson is outstanding; to the right of the hotel is the Hudson River Walkway brid...

Arrived 11/2/13 for a wedding. Early check in was no problem. Room size was large Room 921. Older style wall heater. A/C was off. We had very warm weather for November. Window opened and cooled room nicely. Beds were firm. Front desk was helpful and very polite. Free parking for guest. Package came with breakfast. Nice selections and cook right. Bar in lobby most mixed drinks were 6 dollars. Waitress at table side served us once and then had to go to bar guess a 3 dollars tip for four dinks wasn't enough, even after our table became 10. It was faster to go to the bar. would go back again if we travel to Poughkeepsie again

I've stayed here several times over the years and I also grew up in Poughkeepsie. Several other reviewers have referred to this hotel as being located in a seedy part of town etc.
in fact, it is located basically at the corner of main and market streets which is the heart of downtown and one of the nicer sections of downtown. It is one block from the main police station, across the street from the county courthouse and adjacent to the civic center. It is also one block from the historic barduvon theater and a couple of decent bar/restaurants.

I can confirm that the attached parking garage, which is multiple-leveled and "open" can be a bit spooky at night and all users should have some situational awareness , but I am not aware of a crime wave at that location.

The hotel is not part of a chain so it suffers from not meeting common "standards" and probably lacks the financial resources to do routine updates which it needs. It also suffers from a random collection of front desk clerks who lack consistently in their approach to customer satisfaction so don't expect any special attention.
