Owner description: Overlooking the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie New York, the 200-acre Locust Grove Estate is a museum and nature preserve centered on a 45-room Italianate villa built in 1851. Begining in 1895 new owners William and Martha Young redecorated the mansion with their vast collection of art and antiques, and added new gardens. Mr. and Mrs. Young's daughter, Annette, lived at Locust Grove until 1975, preserving the estate essentially as her parents had used it. Inside the historic mansion, step back in time to the early years of the 20th century; the Young family's collection of Hudson River School paintings, early 19th-century American furniture, and personal possessions are still in place after more than a century.

“Lovely Locust Grove”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

Locust Grove was the home at one time of Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph. However, prior to this invention that opened up communication to the whole world, he was a well-reputed portrait painter. Some of his paintings are exhibited in the art gallery adjacent to the gift shop. After wandering through the garden to enjoy the beautiful Dahlias, we toured the home with a retired art teacher as a guide. He enthusiastically relayed stories and history that brought the place to life, even though the furnishings were left from a later resident, Annette Innis Young, and not from Samuel Morse's time. Mr. Morse had the house built in the 1850's to resemble villas he had seen in Italy. The setting on the eastern bank of the Hudson River offers dramatic views of the water.

“A lovely place.”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

We got there by 9am because it said on the brochure thats when it opened. The house and museum didnt open until 10am. We wandered around the grounds and saw the house. The settings are lovely. Great for hikers because there are trails you can follow down to the Hudson River. The gift shop was very nice.

Reviewed September 18, 2012

We had previously visited Locust Grove to tour the mansion and gounds and enjoyed the history and beautiful views of the Hudson River. This time we were there for a wedding and it was a beautiful setting. The gardens provided a lovely background and the facilities were warm and inviting. Everything was perfect.
