“Small but must-see collection”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Give yourself about 1-2 hours to see this small collection. The center is located on Vassar College Campus and boast some major pieces and classical Greek, Roman and Asian antiquities. Children are likely to be bored stiff - this is an art museum only, with no guided tours or activities.

“Relatively unknown gem in Poughkeepsie, New York”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

We selected Poughkeepsie, New York as a stopover to rest between Canada and New York City. Looking for cultural opportunities, we found Vassar College and its excellent art museum. We spent two full hours touring the various art works. The lady at the reception told us that the museum is a "secret" that not too many people know about.

“Quality collection, new building, but small”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

Being Vassar, you would expect to find some of the highest regarded names in art, and it doesn't disappoint. Over the years, alumni have donated high quality works by just about everyone. Of special note is their great Hudson River School painting collection with some large works by Frederick Church. The building was built about 20 years ago with funds from the Lehman Loeb family. It's light, airy, and modern. Parking is along the street outside the main gate, and inside along the drive. Admission is free. Check Vassar's website for current exhibition. I am an artist/art educator and have visited the museum many times. It's a great resource, but don't expect to find the vastness of the Met or MOMA.

Permanent collection is wonderful, especially the Hudson River School art which is a favorite of mine. They also have interesting exhibitions.

“Beautiful Art in the Hudson Valley”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

What do Johan Laurentz Jensen, Andy Warhol, Doris Lee, Alexander Calder, Luke Anowtalik and Georgia O'Keefe have in common? They are all part of theincredibly rich permanent collection at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College. Along with many more, the Art Center owns and displays artwork from the Antiquities, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods; plus 19th Century European, 19th Century American and 20th Century art. It is a small museum space with a robust permanent collection and very interesting changing exhibits. After viewing the art you can walk the beautiful campus and get something to eat in the lovely section of Arlington, in Poughkeepsie. Several restaurants are within walking distance from the College.
