Wonderful permanent collection, good temp. exhibits. Vassar is rich, so's their art collection. I call it the mini-Metropolitan!

Many Mexican restaurants nearby on Main St.

“Excellent Collection!”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

This art gallery is located in the heart of the gorgeous Vassar campus. There is no admission fee. The gallery is exquisitely designed and the collection is astonishing: works by Picasso, de Kooning, Rothko, Matisse, O'Keefe, Munch, Bacon are on display, as well as an impressive array of decorative arts, Medieval 2-dimensional iconography, and antiquities. As a DC resident spoiled rotten with the world-class Smithsonian and National Gallery right at my doorstep, I wasn't expecting much but this gallery is worth a visit if you find yourself in Poughkeepsie. You can likely get through the exhibits in an hour.

“Broad, Interesting, Useful Collection - Excellent and Unusual O'Keeffe, Picasso, Miro, Rothko and Agnes Martin”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

This well-designed and workable 36,000 ft2, Art Center designed by Cesar Pelli, now w/the reinstalled Sculpture Garden, has a broad and useful collection for study. The Art Center has some excellent and unusual works by Georgia O'Keefe, Picasso, Miro, Rothko, and Agnes Martin. Some of these works are "typical", others are either early in their career, or diverge from their standard output which makes for some fascinating studies.

The sculpture garden which is a delightful space has works by Frank Stella, Gaston Lachaise and Caro. We particularly enjoyed Frank Stella's work, an unusual effort for him. As expected there are many excellent examples of the Hudson River School paintings. There are also excellent works from other periods, like a beautiful 1300 BCE Egyptian sculpture and a large Han Dynasty "house" sculpture. This is a collection with breath and depth and well worth some hours of enjoyment.

“More finest art in Hudson Valley”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

If you are an art lover and if you are travelling in a Hudson Valley, New York, please yourself and find a time ( about two-three hours) to visit absolutely stunning art museum, The Art Gallery of the Vassar College. it's not only the one of the oldest university art galleries in the USA, it's also a real museum gem with unique masterpieces and even more outstanding spirit. Find on a map the former capital of New York, town Poughkeepsie, and then just follow signs - to Vassar. Famous and successful local beer-maker Mr. Vassar in the end of 19th century was not only talented businessman but also was a great visionary - he wanted to give a good education to girls and thought that art is one of the best horizons to add to minds of future educators... This art gallery is free, but most important - it has a very unusual aura. A lot of biggest names in a world art , but not many works of one of the greats. That's why you are never tired to walk around all the rooms and "collect" the beauty and a spirit of all you see. Never trust anyone who says; " ...yesterday we spent a day in the Metropolitan (or Louvre), and it was fabulous"... it's not true because in any (even greatest) museum you can't walk more than two hours, first you legs rebel, then you mind cries wolfs... That's why the Vassar Art Gallery is a great combo of soul and body comfort. Of course Metropolitan and Louvre (plus a lot others) are A MUST, but you see - I am talking only about the day when you (may be by chance) drive or cruise Hudson near Poughkeepsie.
I envy the feelings of any person who will get to Vassar Gallery for the first time, because I've been there many times. Happy Vassar, dear artfans.
