If you have friends in from out of town you MUST take them to the Walkway. Even on cold winter days, it's worth bundling up to see the views. There is just something majestic about seeing the Mid-Hudson Bridge from the north.

For years I saw the rusting remains of this old rail line that crossed high up over the Hudson river just above Poughkeepsie NY. Then the best thing happened. It was restored as a pedestrian walkway. You can now amble across the river while enjoying the magnificent views to the north and south. Plenty of parking, benches along the way and connecting trails on the western side that'll take you to the bridge to the south, etc. Make sure to spot some train signal relics in the trees as you approach the span. Also, at the western end, look back and under the walkway to see the actual trestle that has been left intact. Bring the kids.

The Walkway Over The Hudson is amazing. The Walkway crosses the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland NY, it is the longest footbridge in the world. You can enter from either side. In the summer there are food vendors and there is also a weekly Farmer's Market on the Poughkeepsie side (not sure which day of the week). The views are amazing in any season. This coming fall (2013) the elevator will be opened on the Poughkeepsie side. It will go from the Walkway to the waterfront below. Also by the fall of 2013 the Dutchess County Rail Trail will be completed all the way from the Walkway to Hopewell Junction. Love it!!!
