I don't agree with the review in regards to chef leaving restaurant to cooks not chefs. The owner is there most days and the chef is Amazing and has won awards! We refer all our visiting friends and co workers to this small restaurant. It's a shame there was a bad experience... But I can't say enough about positive about the good & ambiance. It is a little cold in the restaurant though & I would never hope to be rushed for another table to sit. The wait staff should be trained properly.

Poughkeepsies best restaurant. Crave's refined cuisine is a gem in a worthy setting. The Dining Room's brick walls are dimly light by candles. Diners sit in comfortable cozy copper top tables with small arrangements of flowers. Brown cloth lamps hang from the ceiling providing soft lighting, and background music is always just right. Service is impeccable.The waiters, the bartender, and entire staff are always well orchestrated.

On a recent visit, I began with a delicately cooked spanish octopus. Next came a medium rare new york strip cooked to perfection. And dessert was a heavenly banana glazed cheesecake. A very comprehensive list wines is dominated by French,Spain and California selections, but also offers Italian vintages i.e Brunello and Barolo. There wine specialist Zach can help you pair the right wine with your meal. Chefs Edward Kowalski and Catherine Williams are outstanding. Angie behind the bar is very attentive to all your drink needs and has an extensive knowledge of all drinks.

We have been to restaurants in Paris, Madrid and NYC and Crave in Poughkeepsie is a gem worthy of any big city.

This is what happens when the owner/head chef leaves his business in the hands of "cooks," not chefs. We were a group of 4, ordered drinks - no flavor, watered down taste. This happened before, but, at least, the food was good last time. Probably one of the worst mixed drinks I have ever paid for.....weak and uneven pour between 2 glasses. Now, the "food..." Veal breast: 2 small, uneven rectangles of breaded, tasted like deep fried, FATTY, veal breast with soggy spatzle and cabbage. GROSS and unappetizing. Should have sent back, but, knew I would NEVER visit again, not worth the effort. Brought home for the opossom that visits our back yard.... Short Ribs: Small portion, TOUGH!! Tasteless !! Expensive !! Fish: Blah. Pasta: RAW ! overall, not good! Shame on owners for letting inexperienced cooks run your kitchen on a Saturday night ! Never again !

Took the family of four to Crave midweek for a late dinner. It does not look like much from the outside but as soon as you step in the door you are transformed to a different place - a warm inviting place where the focus is on you. Soft lighting and warm colors made it feel very comfortable even though it is a small place. The staff greeted us warmly and were constantly in the background. It seemed that everyone on the team attended to us at one point.
The menu is very creative and we were pleased by how delicious our choices were. We started with a duck pasta, shrimp dumplings, and duck scrappel (that's right - scrappel). It was all wonderful. The duck pasta was my favorite but my son enjoyed the duck scrappel for its unique flavors. For entrees I had the surf and turf (excellent filet and crab stuffed shrimp); my wife had the bass (excellent taste and light); my daughter had the New York strip (the best we had ever tasted!); and my son had another appetizer that looked interesting - the octopus (I did not have any but he ate it all and loved it).
Chef Abby came out to check on us - she is a recent Culinary Institute of America grad and I suspect that this is the beginning of a career in which she will be recognized for her skill in putting unique tastes together to make delicious food. The rest of the staff is all from the CIA as well and made for an excellent experience. Ask for Rachel - a chef in her own right who, on this night, was our expert server.

We've been going there for more at least three years and, until the most recent visits, the place had been a treat to look forward to. Whatever's changed, it is slipping and we apparently are not the only ones to have noticed as the crowd has noticeably thinned. Used to be on weekends you absolutely had to have reservations, now its an easy walk in with lots of available tables.

On the plus side, it's still an attractive room, the services is attentive, and there is an obvious effort being put in. Where it's not what it what it used to be is the food. The descriptions and appearance of the plates is still ingriguing, but the preparation suffers. Not that it's outright bad, it's just that the flavors and execution are no more than pedestrian and sometimes distinctly off the mark. What you get does not match the prices being charged. Wine by the glass runs between $9 and $12/ which would be OK if it were complementing a comenserate meal. But with the less than exciting food, the wine seems a bit steep.

Now this is not a warning to stay away, but, if you do decide to give them a try, keep the expectaions modest and you might be OK. As to TA #1 restaurant in Poughkeepsie, not our vote.
