“The BEST in the county”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014 via mobile

I have lived her my entire life and never ate here because I thought you absolutely needed reservations and that it was some house with 6 tables. I was wrong. From what I could see there were 3 dining areas and a small comfortable bar to wait in should you not have reservations. While the prices are high compared to most of St. Lawrence County, the elegance and service make up for it. It's obvious that the chef is high class and the meals are prepared with excellence. This place is my new favorite!

“Best restaurant in Potsdam area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

In a part of the country not known for gastronomic excellence, this restaurant would stand up well in any food-conscious city. It has a well-designed European menu based on locally sourced produce, with imaginative accompaniments and sauces. Service and ambience is excellent, and the winel ist is good. For its quality it is excellent value, and nice little surprises are thrown in - such as appetisers before the meal, and a delicious mint sorbet "to clear the palate" between starter and main. Dinner for two, with three courses and wine came to just under $100 - and it was worth every dollar.

One person in our party was gluten intolerant and was able to find much on the menu which suited her. This is a boon in a "bread with everything" part of the country.

The only slight drawback is that it is in quite an isolated spot on a busy main road (half way between Potsdam and Canton), and easy to whizz past without seeing it, particularly at night. There's no way of getting to it if you don't have a car.

We dined there the night before Thanksgiving based on previous Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed! It was a wonderful evening with delicious food and good service.

“Great restaurants are hidden all over!”

Off to see a hockey game at St-Lawrence University in neighbouring Canton, NY. Came across 1844 and took the chance. Well worth the gamble.

Excellent comfort food. Try the bison meatloaf. Very modern take on many dishes. They had a pumpkin soup on the table d'hote that was excellent.

Beautiful dining rooms, great vibe from the full-house and excellent service.

Seek and ye shall find.

“This restaurant offers outstanding service and sophisticated food in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013 via mobile

A colleague and I recently travelled to northern New York for business and were amazed to find this excellent restaurant. A nice touch was the complimentary bites provided - small mushroom pastries to start, palate cleansing sherbet at mid-meal and chocolates at the finish.

The pumpkin gnocchi and buffalo shrimp appetizers were both delicious. The 6 large shrimp were seasoned perfectly and could have served as an entree if accompanied by a small salad or side dish. We both chose diver scallops with risotto as entrees and we were not disappointed. I am not a big fan of risotto but this dish demonstrated how good it can be when prepared by the right chef!

This restaurant definitely exceeded our expectations. It was expensive but well worth every penny.
