Description: One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck. When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

Well i guess is that if you have a restaurant with a beautiful view on the water and almost no restaurant in long island has such views (Hard to believe, but quite a reality, especially in the North Shore). Well then you pay less attention to the food..... This is what happens here. Food is OK but not worth the price.
In brief hard to believe why they can't have better food....

I have not eaten at Louie's for a long, long time. My wife and I were both craving seafood last night, and we decided to go to Port Washington. We did not make a reservation.
There were a lot of people waiting for tables when we arrived, so we decided to sit at the bar and eat. The food exceeded our expectations. Fresh salad, clams oreganata, fried shrimp, lobster and a bunch of sides - ALL DELICIOUS! Our bartender, James, was friendly, professional, and suggested a few mixed drinks for my wife.
Yes, it's a high end restaurant and it is not cheap, but there is great food value for your money.
This is the way a restaurant experience is supposed to be! We will return!

my boyfriend and I had reservations for 6pm. at Louie's.we sat right down at a great table, before the crowds. the service was excellent, the food was amazing, and we are going to make it a tradition to go there every new year's eve. he had lobster special, I had salmon, fried calamari, the best, good mashed potatoes, great salad and great bass appetizer with shrimp, the crème brulee was out of this world. highly recommend it. great water views, can't beat it.

The location and view is very nice, as are the wait staff and bartenders. Then the wheels fall off the wagon. The food is average at best. I liked it much better when it was owned by a Port Washington family for generations. The people who have Louies now basically bought the time honored name and tossed the old charm into the bay.

We go to Louies every year when my friend gets a card giving her a free lobster for her birthday. With everything else, the bill seems to be out of site - they really know what they are doing. That aside, the service is very good, but sometimes overbearing as they seem to want to rush you out. The food is average as seafood restaurants go and the menu is a little boring. If you don't get the free lobster, just head south to Freeport and each at Rachels.
