Description: One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck. When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

The location and view is very nice, as are the wait staff and bartenders. Then the wheels fall off the wagon. The food is average at best. I liked it much better when it was owned by a Port Washington family for generations. The people who have Louies now basically bought the time honored name and tossed the old charm into the bay.

We go to Louies every year when my friend gets a card giving her a free lobster for her birthday. With everything else, the bill seems to be out of site - they really know what they are doing. That aside, the service is very good, but sometimes overbearing as they seem to want to rush you out. The food is average as seafood restaurants go and the menu is a little boring. If you don't get the free lobster, just head south to Freeport and each at Rachels.

Flew in from Dallas and headed straight to Louie's for some of that NY Style seafood without the NY City traffic. And, they delivered. Service was perfect, food was excellent. Dessert's had their usual calorie content!

For those who remember the original Louie's this new sleek restaurant is still a disappointment. The food is good, but not great and overpriced. Too bad since the view of the bay is marvelous. Go for drinks and the watch the sunset, then go to any of the many other great Port Washington restaurants for a really good dinner.

I've been going to Louis for twent five years. Whether you are going in the summer and sitting outside or in the winter time, you will never be disapponted. The food, service and atmosphere are all way above average. They always have interesting specials. My advise is "Make a reservation". Highly recommend this restaurant. Great sunset views over the bay.
