Description: One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck. When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

Right on the water with a busy bar, place to meet people and the food is prepared quickly and it is good. Great hang out for the summer after work.

“Best Seafood Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

This is one of the best seafood places on Long Island. The ambiance and view from the restaurant's outside deck was fantastic. The service and food was exceptionally good. The selection on the menu was outstanding and plenty of variety. We had our 50th high school reunion attendees meet there at the bar. We were serviced and had sumptuous appetizers. The area was wide and people were able to mingle comfortably. The dining area on the outside deck was fabulous with great views of Manhasset Bay. The waitress was courteous and professional i serving the meal.

“Love the view - liked the food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Once up a time in 1905 Louis opened as a barge in Manhasset bay. Later that barge was tethered to the dock where it became an institution. Well now is over 100 years later, the Zwerling family sold it and guess what, it's now better than ever.

The spectacular view has not changed but the quality of food, drink & mostly service has has upped it's game 10 fold.

Enjoy the fresh sea food. Order steamers, clam, lobster, oysters & count on a great meal.

Yes, you can still arrive by boat as they have an active dock & yes in season you can dine out doors. It's worth the summer crowds. Come & have a fun time.

“Bland overcooked food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

You can't beat the view from this establishment, located directly on the waterfront, but don't expect gourmet food or you will be disappointed.

The tuna tartar tacos were just chopped up tuna with something green squirted on top sitting in mini flavorless taco shells. No flavor, cilantro, avocado or spices. Fish was overcooked and dry without flavor and two of the oysters were bad.

You safest bet is to order a lobster dinner or one of their lobster rolls, either warm or hot they are usually good. On the pricey side for these items.

It is really loud, both inside and out, and the dark colored awning makes it really hot to sit outside. I once sat at a booth inside and could hear the people across the room better than I could hear the person next to me. I am not very old and have good hearing.

On the bright side the staff is very friendly but will try to "upsell" and try to get you to order more than you need.

Lunch for four, without ordering lobster, any alcoholic beverages or bottled water (diet coke and iced tea all around) came to $160 with the tip. A bit high on my scale.

“Great Ambiance, Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2012

We come here often in the summer. They are always crowded so reservations are a good idea. The food is really good, heavy on the seafood but other options as well. The view of the LI Sound is beautiful, and there is docking available. The only criticism I have is that the hostesses are not very friendly or helpful, but the waitstaff is fine.
