“Local History”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

This was an unexpected stop while we were in the area having a late lunch. It was a small group tour, just us and another couple. Our tour guide was very friendly. She gave us the history of the house and family that lived there. She took us around the grounds (there are other buildings to see). The tour lasted about 40 minutes, and there is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Well worth it!

“A Historical Perspective”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

While spending a beautiful afternoon in Port Jefferson, my husband and I learned some history about this coastal town. We went on an informative and wonderful guided tour of The Mather House Museum Complex. The house and surrounding buildings were home to John Mather, a major shipbuilder, and his family. The property dates back to the 1800's and includes period furnishings, shipbuilding artifacts, tools, maps, pictures, clothing and such. They have a very impressive clock collection as well. If you are interested in purchasing antique items, they are for sale in the museum shop.

“A ship builders house on Beautiful Grounds.. With Clock house & Out buildings.”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

The Port Jefferson Historic Society gives a nice tour... of the ship builders house.. Beautiful Front Porch.. Beautiful Grounds..Open Thursday - Sundays 12-4 pm. A donation is recommended give whatever you can. Bring your kids.. they will enjoy The Clock House with over 200 clocks, housed in a separate climate controlled building.
The grounds are extensive and so pretty with beautiful flowers. A very large lot for downtown PJ. The out buildings on the tour include a carriage shop with carriages (they use in parades), a carpenters shop, butcher, barber and post office.
Ask for the brochure with self guided walking tours of local homes.

Visit the well decorated house... The Consignment Store... next door and take home an unique, priced right gift or treasure from old and new jewelery, tea pots, llardo, glass wear, china, post cards, cuff links, linens, old toys . What ever you collect you will find it there a real find.

The season ends in October with the Grand Old Auction, on the grounds... an event you have to attend and not miss!! No reserves

Look for the signs... on Main Street and East Main walk up hill a few houses on the left
115 Prospect Street.
