I knew the Tara Inn when it first opened over 30 years ago. It was a bargain then and it is a bargain now. Understand this is a funky restaurant with a loyal following and certainly not fine dining. It makes no pretense. The plates are paper and the silverware (except for steak knives) is plastic. The menu is written on paper plates stapled to the wall. Was back there for the first time in ten years last week. Had 6 huge fried shrimp, rib eye steak, chili, salad, french fries and onion rings. Price? 9.99. My wife had 1 1/4 lb lobster with fries, soup and salad. Price? 9.99. of course we could have had the $1 burger or the $1.50 roast beef sandwich...all steals. It has a huge bar crowd every night where, during Happy Hour, you can pay as little as 5 cents (yes cents) for your drink. If you are anywhere near Port Jefferson don't miss it.
