“An Old Fave Closes Down”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

Well, they closed on September 15th, chef and manager burned out it appears. Dan should be setting up a food truck one of these days soon though, which will be nice. Went there on day before closing. Food was good, some great, some mediocre. But service was soooo slow, we missed our movie. Waited a good 25 minutes between first and second course! And the second course was two more appetizers even, which can't take long to fry up. Oh well, have had some good times there. Will miss the simple but great Fennel/Apple salad, and the short rib in winter.

“Somewhere more than "average", but not quite "very good"”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

Our experience at Haven was mixed. The wine by the glass selection is pretty good, and the portions are generous. The draft beer choices are also good. The food was uneven. The cantaloupe gazpacho special was tasty, and not at all sweet. We also like the mussel appetizer and the broth it came with. Thanks for the toast points to sop that up. :-) Two of us ordered the pork parmesan entree special and found the pork very tough. It's always great when a burger is cooked to order, like at Haven.

“Food and service uneven”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Haven is a pleasant restaurant in (of course) Pleasantville. But "pleasant" doesn't cut it at their prices....We had a 5:30 dinner reservation for a Saturday. When our movie at the Jacob Burns Film Center was shorter than expected, we made our way over to Haven hoping to have a couple quiet drinks at the bar. When we arrived the door was wide open so we went in, but were told that since the manager wasn't there we couldn't have drinks at the bar. So we went across the street to an Irish pub. We had 2 or 3 drinks there and then made our way back to Haven. I found it puzzling that they couldn't accommodate our request to have drinks at the bar while we waited. It certainly would have been more money for them....
We were seated at a nice window table that we were told the Clinton's had sat at. The staff, while friendly, did not seem very professional. Many of them were dressed in jeans which doesn't exactly fit a fine dining experience on a Saturday night.
The waitress brought us our drinks in a timely fashion and a busboy delivered some kind of fresh made taco chips and a dip to our table. The dip seemed mostly to be made of Garbanzo beans and not much else----entirely bland and tasteless.
We ordered the highly recommended Corn Bisque as an appetizer. It was indeed very good but almost TOO sweet. When it was served we were not offered fresh pepper (which it really needed) --we had to request it.
For entrees we ordered a corn/asparagus Ravioli and a grilled Hanger steak. Neither was satisfactory. The ravioli was (like the bisque) too sweet, and the steak was too sour.... I gave a bite of the steak to my wife thinking, "It's awfully vinegary!". Upon tasting it, the first words out of her mouth were, "Too vinegary!"
It's not that the food here is bad, it just seems to need a finer palate in the kitchen.
When the waitress asked us how our food was I was in the middle of telling her that the ravioli was too sweet and the steak too sour when she spilled an entire glass of Pinot Grigio on my wife. She apologized profusely and earnestly and offered a free glass of wine. I told her that it was no problem----that accidents happen---- and that we simply wanted our check.
The staff, to their credit are very friendly as I said above, but the professionalism needs to be polished up a bit. Given the choice between reserved and distant professionalism and friendly, I will always choose friendly, but there are ways to be professional AND friendly that they haven't mastered here yet. I like a server who makes genuine contact but at the same time is not overly familiar or cloying. The WORST kind of server to me is the imperious snob type---I won't brook that for a second. The second worst is the phony, friendly by the numbers server, who makes no connection at all and always thinks they are being professional simply because they say "sir".
Haven COULD be a good restaurant, they just need some expert guidance.

“Haven is Heaven”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Went with a group of 6 last night and it was unanimous "Haven Restaurante, just a short walk from the Jacob Burns Film Center, is a fine restaurant and we were all very glad that we finally tried it for dinner. The menu is quite varied, choices for everyone. Service was excellent. The Fennel & Apple salad was delicious. My pasta dish was great! The people who had fish were extremely pleased. It's worth the short walk to have dinner at Haven.

We'll all be back soon.

“Limited”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

We've been to Haven twice in the the last 3 weeks and have decided to not go back which is a shame becuase it has nice ambiance, the staff is friendly and the location is very convenient. But - the menu is very limited and the choices not very tasty. Last night we both had the soft shell crabs. The unbreaded crabs were a little unpleasant to eat since all I could focus on was the crunchy shell. Soft shells are usually dipped in a little flour before being sauted. What made the dish unedible was the that the crabs had not been properly cleaned - eating a mouthful of sand was more unpleasant than the unbreaded shells. Another unfortunate event for last night - they had run out of their standard homeade hummus. Saturday night and they run out of a staple - really? They brought us the homade chips that are usually terrific. These were stale. The waitress brought us another bowl claiming these to be freshly baked. They had mixed the stale chips with the fresh chips. How could they get something like this so wrong? On our previous visit, we ordered the the lemon chicken at the suggestion of the waiter. This dish was bland and unattractive. The entire dish was all one color. The chicken was flavorless. The sauce tasted as if it came from a bottle. Overall - not worth it.
