My husband and I ate here with another couple a few weeks ago. We had the chickpea fries and split one of the shrimp dishes, and our friends had the mac n' cheese and a pork tenderloin dish. Everything tasted great. The mac n' cheese was really rich and you could taste the truffles; my shrimp was flavored really well, the chorizo stuffing was tasty, but the shrimp were a little overcooked. The pork dish was a hit too. The chickpea fries were unexpected; I had never seen anything like that and they were quite tasty. The chef came out to check on the food, the restaurant was quiet and comfortable, and the service was very attentive. We ended our dinner with a dense chocolate cake/brownie, which was certainly the low point of the meal. Overall, we'd all go back. I usually eat vegetarian and I was pleasantly surprised by how many options there were.

We are delighted to have discovered this quaint and friendly restaurant on our way to the movies this past weekend. The menu is innovative, the dishes well crafted, the ambiance warm. We enjoyed a leisurely meal with attentive and accommodating service. The risotto was rich and warming, the squash soup was the best that I've tasted. The only complaint was a somewhat overcooked buffalo burger.

We were attracted to Haven by a few interesting vegan options on the menu, along with traditional meat and fish dishes. The food did not disappoint. Our appetizers were solid: the salads were very fresh and tasty, and our group also enjoyed the relatively large serving of mussels, the butternut squash soup, and the vegan chickpea fries. The buffalo burgers were satisfying, and the vegetarian enjoyed the white bean "meatballs" which were served with a generous portion of greens and pasta. The vegan chocolate cake was surprisingly good. And the wine list had some interesting specials. Unfortunately, the service was not on par with the food. Our young server constantly rushed up to our table and interrupted us. Meals were brought out while an appetizer was still being enjoyed. Wine was not poured for us. The chef/owner stopped by to say hello and he obviously cares a lot about making food his customers want. He is succeeding, but needs to bring the service up a notch to provide the total experience. I wish him luck, because the food is definitely worth it!

We live in the area, and recently decided to see a movie at Jacob Burns and try the Haven restaurant. We had been there many years ago, though it might have been for lunch, and under a different name at the time, and thought we'd try it again (we didn't remember it being anything special back then). This time however, we had a really good meal. The menu, though not that big, has an interesting selection of items; everything from fish dishes to a buffalo burger. There are some great appetizers as well. We ended up going back again last weekend (so twice in August) with family, which included a 14 year old and grandparents. I again ordered the warm spinach salad as one of the appetizers which everyone loved, and they had a squash special appetizer which was excellent. For the entree both men got the buffalo burger which they enjoyed, the teenager ordereed a pizza appetizer as her meal (it was certainly big enough), and my mother said her tilapia was the best tilapia she had had (and she ordered the sauce on the side and didn't eat it).

The portions aren't huge, but they are not small either. You don't go away hungry. They have a yummy dessert w/ nutella as well. It was better the first time, but it was good the second time too. I think they used less nutella the 2nd time we were there. Enjoy!

Haven in Pleasantville is a small contemporary restaurant in a mid-block spot that seems to change hands every other year. We dropped in on a recent warm summer Saturday evening without reservations and were surprised to find the place half-empty. Here are our observations:

1. The decor is minimal; tables are a bit cramped. Our table was adjacent to the bar and bar patrons were literally hovering over us and occasionally bumping into our chairs.

2. Our waitress was pleasantly affable and informal, but also a bit clueless. She was not aware of what drinks were on the menu, and insisted that some items were not available even though they had just been served to another table. When serving a bottle of wine, she completely mangled the cork and served the wine with bits of cork in it. One of our appetizers was apparently missed and finally came with our entrees.

3. Many menu items listed on the restaurant's web site were not available; something of a disappointment.

4. When we asked if there were any specials, we were told that "all the items on the menu were specials." A limited number of appetizers and entrees were available, leaning more toward seafood than land fare.

5. The food itself was fresh, well-prepared and very tasty. Portions were on the small side.

6. Considering the venue itself, the service, and the food, we felt that the cost per person was high.

In summary, Haven seems to provide professionalism from its kitchen in a less-than-professional atmosphere. If you're local, it is worth a visit but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to get there.
