“Really the best "Michigan" ever”

Texas Red Hots Clare and Carl's

Don't ask for a Red Hot, their specialty is a Michigan: a high grade hot dog in a soft roll with a secret sauce that beats the others. It's not chili; it's not a tomato sauce; it's boiled meat with several spices that compliments the dog perfectly. If you want to add onions just say "buried". People drive hundreds of miles for this treat; and devour many portions. I've been coming here for fifty years! You won't find this anywhere else that I know of -- certainly not this good.

For Michigan Redhots (except their sign calls them Texas Red Hots), Clare & Carl's is the best there is, bar none.

And their burgers surely rate amongst the top 5 of any I've ever had.

Their fries are run of the mill, but not bad at all.

Any negatives about the place are few and far between. One might be that they no longer serve milkshakes, having removed them from the menu about 18 years ago by my best guess. But all is not lost as there is a Stewart's convenience store right next door and no one at Clare's would object if you brought a BYO shake from there to have with your Michigan or cheeseburger.

And the fact that they are open from mid-April to mid-October might be the only other negative.

While decor is almost non existient, the place is squeaky clean. I'm sure the tumble-down appearance scares some folks off, but in my opinion it just adds to the whole experience.

This is where the locals have been eating for 60 years. If you have never had a "Michigan" get your first one here. It may be a local delicacy- not really a chili dog, not really like any other "topped" dogs I have tried all over the US. I never pass up a chance to eat here. Eat in the car, at a picnic table or if you are brave, inside. I don't care for take out as the 20 minute drive home tends to make the fries soggy and the hot dog roll too soft- that' my only complaint and I have been eating here for 60 plus years. Check out the NPR story on this place-

Sure it's sinking into the ground. They celebrate it by selling T-Shirts showing the crooked building. Sea gulls (from Lake Champlain) will fly over head occasionally for one of their yummy fries (also on the T-Shirt). The Michigans are not too spicy, they are terrific too. The car hops are fun, the picnic table dining is fun, eating at the slated counter inside is fun. Give it a go!

"What to do in Plattsburgh" definitely try this place. Big 50's flashback. Before it was called fast food. Clean and honest Mom and Pop place. Tasty, inexpensive and straightforward. A must.
