Lovely setting but expensive, considering the mediocre food. My "Indonesian" style rib was totally tasteless and I ended up using ketchup to add some kind of flavor. Rice was unadorned.

Hostess was rude. Wait staff was good.

“Fantastic once again!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

Another beautiful Saturday evening sitting on the Erie Canal watching the ducks and the boats go by enjoying a nice bottle of Cakebread Chardonnay. Service is always fantastic from being seated by Johann down to our waitress and busboys filling our water glasses. If you're looking for the best place in the Rochester, New York area in the summer for outdoor dining you can't beat Richardson's.

“Enjoyable Evening by the Erie Canal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

This was only the second time I had dined here, the first being some 5 years ago in their main restaurant, which I had found to be a little stuffy, trying to be something 'a bit European' and missing the bar.

However, my second experience of dining at the Richardson's Canal House was extremely enjoyable. It is summer and the 'bar' area is much more informal and you can eat outside as well. The evening threatened thunderstorms, and when I booked I was asked would I still be coming if the weather turned. I would and they said that if the weather was wet there was enough room to eat inside.

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Not quite sure where to go to the other restuarant, and as the main restaurant is right by the entrance door, the greeter for the main restaurant walked us down to the other restaurant and we were seated outside under a hard marquee.

It was busy for a Thursday evening and there were a steady number of diners coming and going. There was one group with children who were particularly noisy - why is it that people with children think we all want to hear their conversations and not have a conversation with the people we had arrived with - but a few steely glares from other guests in their direction quietened them down to an acceptable level.

The menu looked virtually the same as the main restaurant, and they had lamb - a rare find in an American restaurant or supermarket. For some reason Americans do not eat much, if any, lamb and apart from it being exorbitantly expensive when you can find it, we do not know why - we have come to the conclusion it is because they are sweet and cute looking - if anyone knows please tell me!

Anyway, the lamb was superb as was the garlic mash it laid upon. My other diner had Artic Char - translate that to salmon - it was nice but nothing to write home about he said. We had had a starter each and the salad with the strawberries was particularly light and tasty. Dessert was creme brulee - a bit of an expert here - and it did come up to scratch - so no one was disappointed.

Service was good, they got it right, were not too 'in your face' which can happen in America a bit, but then disappeared when it was clear that you were enjoying the evening, and you were there for good food, and good company.

The Richardson Canal House is situated on the Erie Canal, it is a lovely spot on the terrace and the outlook over the canal is very picturesque.

This was a lovely evening, but this is one of the better restaurants in the Rochester NY area to go to, so the price reflects this

“Great Outdoor Dining”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

Don't believe what Google says, Richardson's patio IS OPEN on Sunday night during the summer. We had a really nice meal outside in a terrific setting. How many places in Rochester can you get great food al fresco? Johann is a true gentlemen and great restauranteur.

“Accommodating staff and great food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

We arrived as the lunch service was coming to an end, and the restaurant accepted us nevertheless. The accommodating nature of the staff and the service were excellent. In addition the food was tasty and the setting along the canal was extremely enjoyable despite a few pesky mosquitoes (even for lunch). Our overall experience was very good, and this is a great place to have lunch or dinner (I have had dinner there several times). Well done.
