Phoenicia was once a bustling railroad junction taking hot city folk arrving at Kingston into the cool peaceful mountains. Now various volunteer networks are being established to re-open the complete railway system in the Catskill and in the Empire State Railway museum, which is part of the Catskill Mountain Rail Road, you have one.

This comprises both of a museum and a working railway which has excurisions down (and back) its line.

The museum has a splendid display of information, models and posters of the bygone years - 600,000 passensges passed through Phoenicia back in the late 1880's.

Whilst more rolling stock and a steam loco are in the pipeline, currently the rail trip consists of a small (quaint) diesal engine, a passenger carriage and an open air 'gondala'. and lasts over 90 mins - taking you through the wooded countryside, alongside rivers, past graxzing deer (if you are lucky a bear or two) and across roads - it was fun to see the traffic backed up for our little train.

The train runs Fri, Sat & Sun during the summer from Phoenicia to Cold break and back, The volunteers are very welcoming and good humoured. The conductor told us that he was recently promised a pay rise of 20%. However as he pointed out as he doesn`t actually get paid the pay rise wasn't much (well nothing in fact).

The museum is free (donations invited) and the rail trip costs $14 for adults (reduced for juniors). Whilst they have a lot of work to do (and need more volunteers all the time) it is recmommended for a visit. Check them out for yours seleves at http://www.catskillmtrailroad.com/
