I live on Seneca Lake and have visited most of the many wineries that surround the lake. I have recently revisited many of these wineries with Jacob Altmann, a young and talented German winemaker who has taken over those duties at the new Ryan William Vineyard on Seneca Lake’s east side in Hector. We drove to Anthony Road because of their fine reputation and because Jacob wanted to meet their German winemaker, Joannes Reinhardt. Megan provided us with an outstanding tasting experience. You could tell from her knowledge that Joannes speaks with the tasting associates to educate them about each wine. Their Rieslings were the best that Jacob has tasted since coming here in March and their award winning 2008 Riesling Trockenbeeren was truly extraordinary. We had the good fortune to find Joannes after our tasting. Jacob and Joannes found that they had worked at the same family owned winery, Kistenmacher-Lengerer in Germany – about 20 years removed from each other. It was a true education for me listening to the two winemakers and hearing what outstanding, and still untapped potential that the Finger Lakes wine region has. If you want a true European wine tasting experience, Anthony Road is a must stop.
