This was super interesting. Lots of original stuff there. Get to see the whole book making process - can participate a little. I just wanted to stay there and play with everything...but of course you can't do that.....

I thought it sounded kind of boring but my teenage son recommended it (he'd been there on a youth trip). I was pleasantly surprised!

The original print shop where the Book of Mormon was published has been restored and the LDS church conducts tours there. It is located on Palmyra's Main Street, which has a nice, small town feel. E.B. Grandin had just opened his printing shop the year before when Joseph Smith approached him to publish the Book of Mormon. He didn't want to publish it at first, believing it to be a fraud. He later agreed and it took 8 months to do the work to publish it. The main floor is the book shop where the printer sold the books he printed. The building next to it on the main floor is a visitor's center where tours begin. The second floor houses the book bindery and the third floor holds the printing presses and type equipment. It is interesting to hear how books were published, how they had to set the type for each 16 page sheet, how the sheets were folded and the books were eventually bound. We each got a half sheet with 8 pages that we could attempt to fold straight in the same way as the book binder would have. It was very interesting to see the printing presses and see how they set the type and inked the plates before pressing them on the paper. It was a time consuming and laborious work. We spent about an hour here, although some tours could be shorter than that. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide who answered all of our many questions.
