Circle W is a revived, reinvented small town general store. The packaged food offerings are thoughtful and cater to the tastes of contemporary folks, emphasizing the epicurean and organic. Freshly-preparred hot meals and sandwiches also stress the organic and local. Vegetarian and vegan options are adequate, but could be more extensive. Circle W is a great local hang-out or a an oasis on your Catskills hiking or skiing adventure.

We were driving around the Catskills on our way to Roundtop for some hiking but after driving many miles, had not found anywhere to get some lunch. We saw Palenville on the map and headed there, hoping at least for something one notch up from gas station sandwiches. As we slowly drove along into the Village, even before seeing the sign for Circle W, we saw happy people sitting at tables in the windows of an historical looking building and immediately stopped.

There are about four rows of grocery shelves full of both basic food and gourmet items. In the back is a deli counter with specials, and baked goods. Many foods seem to be made on site, and everything looked good. We had an enormous BLT, lentil soup and a luscious grilled cheese. And cookies to go. Prices were not cheap, but very good for the quality. There are about six tables, and after you order at the deli the waitress serves you. There were no open tables when we arrived, so we ordered "to go", but a table opened up while we found things to buy and take with us in the grocery section.

The building itself looks like it was a general store forever and is the kind of building often left to rot in rural areas where the convenience stores have taken over. Decor inside is "old general store" with old signs and cannisters but airy and not overdone. The bathroom says "employees only". There are also posters for local events and newspapers.
Overall it was a great place to stop for lunch and I would consider it worth going out of my way for in the future.
