We had my son's 21st birthday dinner there and the food and service was great. We really had a good time in a great atmosphere.

While visiting my daughter at SUNY Oswego last month, we had the pleasure of dining at the 1881 Steakhouse. What a pleasant surprise! The service was outstanding. Our waitress Melissa was friendly, informative and attentive; as was the support staff assisting her. However, far and away the best part of our visit was the food. Everything we had was excellently prepared and presented - two different soups, two types of salads, steak, seafood and chicken. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Oswego to dine at the 1881 Steakhouse.

1881 is probably one of the best experiences you will have in Oswego. With that said, it really doesn't compare to an authentic top steak house in a major city. The venue is that of a hunting lodge which is very nice and it's one of the few local places that is really clean. Chilly evening so all of us had soup which was very good. Must say the serving size on the steak is larger than you think. Filet is supposed to melt in your mouth. Their filet was good but a touch tough. My son had an enormous piece of prime rib which he enjoyed but as he put it --- great for Oswego but he has had better. Mac and cheese side was not as great as they claimed - mostly because it was served lukewarm not hot. Breadsticks scream Olive Garden. Price was terrific - $150 with tax and tip for three people. Overall gave it 4 stars because it is one of the better choices in the area. Will probably return.

My husband, daughter, nephew, and close family friends were in Oswego visiting my oldest daughter who is a student attending SUNY Oswego. Eating dinner at the 1881 steakhouse was a big mistake. We hoped the quality of food would make up for the lack of creativity on the menu. This was not the case. The tempura green beans barely had a tempura batter on them and the dipping sauce was boring and bland. When breadsticks were served, a friend asked if he could have butter. We were informed that there was no butter. NO BUTTER? Have you ever heard of a restaurant not having butter? We began to wonder what the kitchen was cooking with. Not to mention that the server did not offer any option to the butter the restaurant did not have. Entries were served with a choice of any $4 side. When my daughter requested a $4 side salad she was told that was not an option. Overall the food was either bland, (sautéed vegetables), or terribly over spiced, (Cajun fries). When asked if we cared for a homemade dessert we politely declined imagining how disappointed we would have been eating a dessert that is not baked using butter.
