I love history! Unfortunetly history is full of places like this where we the United States had to make a stand for our freedom and lives were lost. The location is beautiful right on the lake and it is well maintained. Lots of parking. If you love american history, then stop by Fort Ontario. You will not be dissapointed.

Enjoyable informative day, with a docent that conveyed an accurate presentation of the battle that occurred and the subsequent events

Its fairly open to the public with some exceptions, you can never seem to find anyone who really works there lol
It is a vary nice open are on the waterfront with great updrafts of wind, so if you want to fly a kite is perfect and never really crowded!
Or if you just want to lay out in the sun, there you go!

Visited with family on a humid, late-August morning. Cost about $8 for both adults and think my 8 year old was free. It was a self guided tour with an info binder that you returned to the admission office when done. The soldier's barracks displayed Fort artifacts ranging from the War of 1812 through WWII. Most of these displays had a touch screen allowing you to type in a number associated with each artifact. You can be selective about which artifacts you wanted more info about. It was a nice set up.

We could walk into all the buildings and read in the binder about what happened in each spot. The access into most of the Fort was great and our 8 year old loved going into the "dark" recesses which wasn't that dark and was safe, btw.

We spent just over an hour and thought it was worth it. We wanted to visit the cemetary inwhich soldiers from the Fort were buried and just walk around since it is on Lake Ontario but there was "suspicious" activity happening in the parking lot, which was NOT the Fort parking lot but close by.

I love going to Fort Ontario both as a reenactor and as a normal visitor. It's beautiful to look out at the lake from the ramparts and the displays are great. The only thing I wish they'd improve upon is not ignoring other time periods. The fort was incredibly important from the French and Indian War all the way up to WWII and all those time periods get almost completely ignored. I know the fort is losing some visitors because of this and it's a shame that they ignore all the other important time periods.
