Oswego, New York is a small community situated on the southern shores of Lake Ontario. It’s a town that time has forgotten. 60 years ago it had a population of 20,000; today it’s about the same, 18,500. All the James Fenimore Cooper “Leatherstocking Tales” took place in and around Oswego. The area is steeped in history. To savor that past I recommend a sightseeing tour of Old Fort Ontario.
One version or another of the fort was around during the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Each battle that took place there was lost and the fort destroyed.
In the last decade or so the interior living quarters have gotten a face-lift. They’ve been spruced up and furnished with period tables, chairs and beds recreating as close as possible what it was like living there 200 years ago.
The Old Fort had a rich history. Allow a half day to soak it all in. Time well spent.
