A great fort ! I was amazed at how many wars this area fought in. If you are a history buff, this is the place for you. reasonable admission.

“Fun Fort for a self-tour visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

Fort Ontario has a rich history & a lot of information in its buildings. Most of the Fort is open for self-touring, they have a detailed brochure you can use (and keep) plus lots of interpretive displays (text & objects). You can tour at least 4 different buildings and see officer's quarters, offices, enlisted quarters, mess hall, etc. plus underground gun casements and wander around on top of the ramparts. Great view of the lake, too. If you have any questions, the admission clerk on duty when we visited was very knowledgeable and happy to help.

“A little history review never hurts any vacation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

We like "old stuff" when we travel; it suits our lifestyle. The Fort is well maintained and the view of the lake makes the experience meaningful. We want to visit the nearby museum next trip; immigrants were "secluded" here during WW II.

“So much history; so little support!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

As I stood at the entrance to the fort I was struck by its importance to America’s history, literally involved in every conflict from the French and Indian War to WWII. My second emotion was one of dismay that state and federal agencies have allowed the facility to deteriorate to its present appearance. Having visited many similar sites in Europe and Asia, I cannot comprehend that as a society the others have, in the case of historical awareness, unmistakably set better priorities.

Most sites one visits to see and learn. Here you can see but learn little.

There remains little of interpretative value; most buildings are empty, the walls crumbling (hence the safety warnings), the staff minimal. There is of course the ubiquitous brief film narrative along with some chronological displays that just begin to scratch the surface of the fort’s significance.

Is a visit worthwhile? Yes. But to fully glean what the visit has to offer, study beforehand.
